Dardhë
Dardhë (; sq-definite, Dardha, literally "pear") is a community in the former municipality of Drenovë in Korçë County, Albania. After local government reform in 2015, it became part of the municipality Korçë. It is a well known ski area of Albania since the 1920s. In 2012, the first ever ski tow in Albania was opened at Bigell Ski Resort near Dardhë. Demographics Dardhë is populated by an Orthodox Albanian population with a minority Aromanian population documented after 1950. There are a few families who were previously nomadic before settling in the village long before the Ottoman invasion in the region. Much of the Orthodox Albanian population has moved away to Albanian cities such as Korçë and Tiranë or migrated to Greece, Romania or the United States. Sotir Peçi
Sotir Peci (1873–1932) was an Albanian politician, educator and mathematician. In 1906 he published the first Albanian-language newspaper in the United States of America in Boston. In 1908 he participated as a delegate in the Congress of Monastir. In 1920 he was appointed Minister of Education of Albania. Early life Sotir Peci was born in Dardhë, a village near Korçë, on July 13, 1873. The son of wealthy merchant Jovan Peci, his father died while he was a child. Peci studied at the local school in Korçë. In 1890 at the age of 17 he enrolled at the University of Athens where he studied physical sciences and graduated with a degree in mathematics. While in Athens he published the Albanian dictionary written by Kostandin Kristoforidhi. Activities in the United States In 1905 Peci migrated to the United States, settling in Boston. Kostandin And Athanas Zografi
The brothers Kostandin Zografi and Athanas Zografi (or as they were known locally, Kostë and Thanas Korçari) were Albanian painters of the 18th century from Dardhë, in modern Korçë municipality, southern Albania (then Ottoman Empire). Polykarpos Bithikoukis
Polykarpos Bithikoukis, surnamed Dardaios ( sq, Polikarp Boçi (Vithëkuqi) Dardhari, el, Πολύκαρπος Μπιθικούκης ο Δαρδαίος), was the Metropolitan of Larissa in 1811–18 and 1820–21. An Albanian from Dardhë, he was elevated to the metropolis of Larissa through the favour of his compatriot, the powerful Ali Pasha of Ioannina, and was, according to his own account, the only metropolitan of Albanian birth in his time. Prior to that, he was Bishop of the Troad. When the British traveller Sir Henry Holland visited Larissa in 1812, he was hosted at the metropolitan residence in Larissa. Holland describes Polykarpos as "not having yet reached his fortieth year", "naturally tall and well formed", with a long black beard. Teodor Laço (6 September 1936, Dardhë – 15 October 2016, Tirana) was an Albanian writer and diplomat. Biography He studied agronomy at the University of Tirana, and made his debut as a writer in 1965 with the novel ''Era e tokës'', although he is best known for his 1971 novel ''Toka e Ashpër'', describing the collectivization of a small village. After 1976, he also wrote screenplays in collaboration with Kinostudio Shqipëria e Re. In 1977, he won an award at the Second Albanian Film Festival for his script for ' (''Confrontation'', or ''The Face-Up''). He later became the manager of the editorial board for the studio's feature films. In 1990, he became head of the Kinostudio, then renamed as "Albfilm". Vatra ('' en, The Hearth'') is an association of Albanian Americans, created in 1912, that has historically protected the rights of the Albanians in the United States, as well as has endeavored in lobbying with the United States Congress about the rights of the Albanians throughout the world. Drenovë ( mk, Дреново, ''Drenovo'') is a former municipality in the Korçë County, southeastern Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became a subdivision of the municipality Korçë. The population at the 2011 census was 5,581. Thomas Nassi
Thomas Nassi (March 2, 1892 – December 21, 1964) was an Albanian-American musician and music educator in both Albania and the United States, his adopted country. Biography Thomas Nassi was born Thoma Nashi (Nasji), in Dardha, then in the Ottoman Empire. Nassi showed early talent in music, first in violin, and then flute. He emigrated to the United States from Greece in 1914 at age 22, first working at a paper company in Maine. He entered the New England Conservatory (NEC) in 1916, majoring in flute performance and conducting. Nassi graduated from NEC in 1918, in which year he also married Olympia Berishi Tsika. Olympia Tsika was a talented singer who had emigrated to the United States from the very same town (Dardha) in Albania, where Nassi was born and spent his first six years. They had three children.
