Daragh McCarthy is a Dublin-born filmmaker and musician. He has directed numerous video clips including early videos for The Frames, a Dublin group led by Academy Award winning Glen Hansard.Liner Notes The Stars Are Underground, Folkrum Records VHS, Cat No:FR007 1996 In 1996 he produced and directed the hardcore punk documentary ''The Stars Are Underground'' featuring Dublin bands of the early 1990s such as The Frames, Mexican Pets and Female Hercules. He is also producer/director of ''Teo: A Life in Music'', a documentary about jazz musician and producer Teo Macero. It was filmed over the last five years of Macero's life. McCarthy went to St. David's CBS, Artane in Dublin. Dublin (; , or ) is the capital and largest city of Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The Frames
The Frames are an Irish rock band based in Dublin. Founded in 1990 by Glen Hansard, the band has been influential in the Dublin rock music scene. The group has released six studio albums. In addition to Hansard, the band's current line-up includes original member Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Dave Hingerty, Joe Doyle, and Rob Bochnik. History The band was established in 1990 and consists of survivors of Dublin's prolific early 1990s rock-and-roll scene. Through support slots, the band was central to the development of many emerging Irish rock bands of the time, including Turn and Bell X1, and a host of singer-songwriters such as Mundy, Paddy Casey, David Kitt and Damien Dempsey. Glen Hansard
Glen Hansard (born 21 April 1970) is an Irish singer-songwriter, musician and actor. Since 1990, he has been the frontman of the Irish rock band The Frames, with whom he has released six studio albums, four of which have charted in the top ten of the Irish Album Charts. In the 2000s, he was one half of folk rock duo The Swell Season before releasing his debut solo album, '' Rhythm and Repose'', in 2012. His 2015 second album ''Didn't He Ramble'' was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. Hardcore Punk
Hardcore punk (also known as simply hardcore) is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. It is generally faster, harder, and more aggressive than other forms of punk rock. Its roots can be traced to earlier punk scenes in San Francisco and Punk rock in California, Southern California which arose as a reaction against the still predominant History of the hippie movement, hippie cultural climate of the time. It was also inspired by Washington D.C. and New York City, New York punk rock and early proto-punk. ''The Stars Are Underground'' is a 24-minute film documenting the underground music scene in Dublin, Ireland, in 1996. The film was first shown in the same year, 1996, and a VHS was released by Folkrum Records. Directed by Daragh McCarthy, the film documents a generation of Irish bands who took their inspiration from American hardcore punk bands who, rather than pursuing major label deals, made their own self-financed records and released their own material. The bands featured and interviewed include Female Hercules, The Mexican Pets, and The Jubilee Allstars. The Stars are Underground also features interviews with Andy Cairns from Therapy? and Dischord Records' Ian MacKaye from the group Fugazi. The film inspired Academy Award winning singer/songwriter Glen Hansard of The Frames to write a song of the same name after he played on a tour of the film's screenings in rock venues in rural Ireland. Mexican Pets
Mexican Pets were formed by Patrick Clafferty and Jill Hahn in Dublin, Ireland in 1991 inspired by American bands such as Hüsker Dü and Dinosaur Jr. The two soon drafted Derrick Dalton in on bass whose distinct and accomplished style was an invaluable contribution to the band's sound. The band never featured a permanent drummer and a string of players graced the stool including two guys called Eric, both of them American. Having made several demo recordings and playing extensive gigs around the country, they had their first break up. Each of its members pursued other musical interests until the spring of 1994 when they reformed. In that same year they found a permanent drummer in Fionan O Leary. Jill Hahn then moved to Manchester, replaced by Brian Gough on other guitar and organ. Teo Macero
Attilio Joseph "Teo" Macero (October 30, 1925 – February 19, 2008) was an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and record producer. He was a producer at Columbia Records for twenty years. Macero produced Miles Davis' ''Bitches Brew'', and Dave Brubeck's '' Time Out'', two of the best-selling and most influential jazz albums of all time. Although the extent of his role has been disputed, he also has been associated with the production of Davis' 1959 album ''Kind of Blue'', jazz's best-selling record. Macero was known for his innovative use of editing and tape manipulation unprecedented in jazz and proving influential on subsequent fusion, experimental rock, electronica, post-punk, no wave, and acid jazz.
