''Daphnis and Chloe'' ( el, Δάφνις και Χλόη), is a 1931 Greek romance film written and directed by Orestis Laskos, based on the namesake novel of the 2nd-century writer Longus. It is sometimes said to be the first European film containing nude scenes. The 1897 George Méliès '' After The Ball'' was much earlier, but uses simulated nudity via use of body stockings. Orestis Laskos ( el, Ορέστης Λάσκος; 11 November 1907 – 17 October 1992) was a Greek film director, screenwriter and actor. He directed 55 films between 1931 and 1971. He also wrote scripts for 24 films between 1929 and 1971. Family He was married to actress Beata Asimakopoulou (died 2009); they had at least one child, a son, Vassilis Laskos. Astra Film Corp was an American film production company that produced silent films. Louis J. Gasnier was the company's president. George B. Seitz co-founded it. It was making films by 1916. It became Louis J. Gasnier Productions after Seitz left. The studio operated in Jersey City, New Jersey before expanding to Fort Lee, New Jersey. ''After the Ball'' (French: ''Après le bal'') is an 1897 French short silent film made by Georges Méliès. It was sold by Méliès's Star Film Company and numbered 128 in its catalogues. Plot A maidservant helps her lady get undressed (with nudity simulated by a bodystocking). The maid helps the woman bathe, pouring water over her, and finally covers and dries her with a robe. Production Méliès was not the first filmmaker to include simulated nudity in a film; Eugène Pirou had already made a film along the same lines in late 1896, ''Le Bain de la Parisienne''.
