''Danse Manatee'' is the first collaborative studio album between Avey Tare, Panda Bear, and Geologist, released in July 2001 on the label Catsup Plate. It was later retroactively classified as the second studio album by their band Animal Collective. Background Only one thousand copies were made for the Catsup Plate release, but it was reissued as a double CD along with ''Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished'' in 2003 on FatCat Records. Band member Geologist, who joined Avey Tare and Panda Bear for the first time on this release, has said that this is perhaps his favorite Animal Collective album, despite its general lack of popularity among fans and critics. Rusty Santos is a record producer and musician based in Los Angeles. He is known for producing, recording, mixing and/or mastering records like Animal Collective’s ''Sung Tongs'' and the reissue of ''Danse Manatee'', Panda Bear’s ''Person Pitch'', Born Ruffians’ ''Red, Yellow & Blue'', Owen Pallett's ''Heartland'' & '' In Conflict'', DJ Rashad's '' Welcome to the Chi'', Dawn of Midi's " Dysnomia", and many more. MiniDisc (MD) is an erasable magneto-optical disc-based data storage format offering a capacity of 60, 74, and later, 80 minutes of digitized audio. Sony announced the MiniDisc in September 1992 and released it in November of that year for sale in Japan and in December in Europe, North America, and other countries. The music format was based on ATRAC audio data compression, Sony's own proprietary compression code. Its successor, Hi-MD, would later introduce the option of linear PCM digital recording to meet audio quality comparable to that of a compact disc.
