Danish Women Workers' Union
The Danish Women Workers' Union ( da, Kvindeligt Arbejderforbund i Danmark, KAD) was a general union representing women working in what were perceived to be lower-skilled jobs, in Denmark. The first union for women in Denmark was founded in 1885, the "Women Workers' Union" (KAF). It initially represented cleaners and laundry workers, but from 1890 also admitted women working in factories. From 1892, it was led by Olivia Nielsen, and it expanded from Copenhagen into other cities. By 1900, it had about 1,000 members, and this led it to establish a new, national union, the "Danish Women Workers' Union", in 1901. The union affiliated to the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions (LO), and by 1920, it organised about 20% of the women in the trade union movement. By 1997, it had 88,232 members, of whom 70% worked in the private sector. General Union
A general union is a trade union (called ''labor union'' in American English) which represents workers from all industries and companies, rather than just one organisation or a particular sector, as in a craft union or industrial union. A general union differs from a union federation or trades council in that its members are individuals, not unions. The creation of general unions, from the early nineteenth century in the United Kingdom and somewhat later elsewhere, occurred around the same time as efforts began to unionise workers in new industries, in particular those where employment could be irregular. Proponents of general unions claim that their broader range of members allows more opportunities for solidarity action and better coordination in general strikes and the like. Detractors claim that the broader remit means they tend to be more bureaucratic and respond less effectively to events in a single industry. Olivia Nielsen
Anna Olivia Nielsen, née Christensen, (1852–1910) was a Danish trade unionist and politician. Under her leadership, the Danish Women Workers Union (KAD) gained prominence as agreements resulted from effective strike action. Founded 1901, Nielsen chaired the organisation until her death in 1910. Biography Born in Helsingør on 7 June 1873, Nielsen was the daughter of Jørgen Christensen, a farmhand, and his wife Anne Marie Olsdatter. Brought up in a working-class environment, she married the factory worker Oluf Nielsen when she was 20 and already pregnant. She went on to have nine children, two of whom died in infancy. In order to provide for the children, Nielsen was forced to work in Helsingør, probably as a laundress. In the 1880s, the family moved to Copenhagen where it was easier to find work. Danish Confederation Of Trade Unions
LO, The Danish Confederation of Trade Unions (Danish: ''LO, Landsorganisationen i Danmark'' or simply ''LO'') was founded in 1898 and was an umbrella organisation (the largest of the three national trade union centers in Denmark) for 18 Danish trade unions. At the end of 2018, it merged into the new Danish Trade Union Confederation. Danish General Workers' Union
The Danish General Workers' Union ( da, Specialarbejderforbundet i Danmark, SID) was a general union representing mostly unskilled and semi-skilled workers, in Denmark. History The union was founded in 1897 as the Danish Workers' Union (DA), becoming the Danish Workers' and Specialist Workers' Union (DASF) in 1959, then in 1974 adopted its final name. It organised workers who were considered unskilled, or semi-skilled, in industries where the most skilled workers were represented by other unions. This sometimes led to conflict, as it argued that the lowest-paid workers should receive the highest wage increases, to reduce pay differentials. United Federation Of Danish Workers
The United Federation of Workers in Denmark ( da, Fagligt Fælles Forbund, 3F) is a Danish labor union. The union was formed in 2004, from the merger of the Danish Women Workers' Union and the Danish General Workers' Union. In 2006, the Restaurant Trade Union merged in to 3F, while, at the start of 2011, it was joined by the Danish Timber Industry and Construction Workers' Union. The 3F was an affiliate of the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions, and since 2019 has been a member of its successor, the Danish Trade Union Confederation (FH). By the end of 2018, its membership had declined to 226,271, but it remained the largest affiliate of FH. Fanny Jensen (1890–1969) was a Danish minister without portfolio and the first female holder of a political office in Denmark. Representing Socialdemokratiet, she was a member of parliament from 1947 to 1953.
