Danish Academy
Danish Academy is an independent organisation founded in 1960 by a circle of Danish intellectuals "to promote Danish esprit and language, especially within the field of literature". It has up to 20 members, currently 18, and is based at Rungstedlund, the former home of author Karen Blixen who was one of the original members. The Academy runs a number of annual literary prizes including most notably its Grand Prize. History Danish Academy was founded on 28 November 1960 at the initiative of the author Karl Bjarnhof and the art historian Christian Elling with originally 12 members. Apart from Bjarnhof and Elling, they were Kjeld Abell, Karen Blixen, Hans Brix, Thorkild Bjørnvig, H.C. Branner, Agnes Henningsen, Tom Kristensen, Jacob Paludan, Paul V. Rubow and Knud Sønderby. Pia Tafdrup
Pia Tafdrup (born 29 May 1952 in Copenhagen) is a Danish writer; primarily a poet, she has also written a novel and two plays, as well as works for radio. She made her literary debut in 1981 and has till now published 17 collections of poetry. Pia Tafdrup's work has been translated into more than twenty-five languages, and her poetry collections ''Spring Tide'' (1989) and ''Queen's Gate'' (2001) have been translated into English and Romanian. Frederik Stjernfelt
Frederik Stjernfelt (born July 6, 1957) is a Danish professor and writer. As a professor, he lectures in science studies, history of ideas, and semiotics, at Aalborg University's Copenhagen department. Career Stjernfelt has been working as a reviewer and writer at 'Weekendavisen' since 1994. Earlier in his career, he was employed as an editor at Gyldendal's cultural journal ' Kritik' between 1993 and 2012. Stjernfelt has been a member of 'Danish Academy' since 2001. Also, he is cofounder of the political network 'Fri debat', which functions to promote freedom of speech. Subsequently, he has published a number of academic as well as popular books and articles. Astrid Saalbach
Astrid Saalbach (born 29 November 1955) is a Denmark, Danish playwright and novelist. Biography She was born in Søborg and trained in acting at the Danish National Theatre School. She worked as an actor for seven years before turning to writing. In 1981, she wrote the radio play ''Spor i sandet'' (Footprints in the sand). That was followed by the radio play ''Bekræftelsen'' (The Confirmation) in 1982 and the television play ''En verden, der blegner'' (A World that Fades Away) in 1984. Peter Laugesen
Peter Laugesen (born 5 March 1942 in Copenhagen) is a Danish poet and playwright and was member of the Situationist International. Peter Laugesen lives in Aarhus and he graduated from Aarhus Cathedral School in 1961 and trained as a typographer. He became a member of the Situationist International in 1962. He was attracted by the writing of Ivan Chtcheglov and contacted Jeppesen Victor Martin and participated in a Situationist exhibition in Denmark. He was then invited to France where he met Guy Debord and Michèle Bernstein and was attracted to the dérive as a poetic practice. Svend Åge Madsen
Svend Åge Madsen ( born 2 November 1939) is a Danish novelist. He studied mathematics before he began writing fiction. His novels are generally philosophical and humorous. Several of his works have been made into films in Denmark. His writings are extensive and has been translated into many languages. Madsen's writing style and philosophy have placed him amongst the most distinguished and widely read authors in Denmark today. His novels reflect the grave problems faced by modern civilisation, and a number of them have achieved cult status in Denmark. Per Kirkeby
Per Kirkeby (1 September 1938 – 9 May 2018) was a Danish painter, poet, film maker and sculptor. Biography By the time Kirkeby completed a masters degree in arctic geology at the University of Copenhagen in 1964, he was already part of the important experimental art school " eks-skolen." His interest in geology and other aspects of the natural world was fundamental to and characteristic of his art. Kirkeby worked as a painter, sculptor, writer, and printmaker. Kirkeby taught as a professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (1978–89) and at Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main (1989–2000). Per Kirkeby was a member of the Danish Academy from 1982. In 1997 he became a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog. Pia Juul
Pia Juul (; 30 May 196230 September 2020) was a Danish poet, prose writer, and translator. She received several prizes and was a member of the Danish Academy. She also taught at the writing school ''Forfatterskolen'' in Copenhagen. Biography Juul was born in Korsør, Denmark, in 1962. Her parents were folk high school teachers Kurt Holger Juul and Inge Kærsgaard Hansen. She grew up in Skælskør before moving to the village Rørbæk in Himmerland at the age of six with her parents, her brother, and her younger sister. Juul graduated from Hobro Gymnasium in 1981 and enrolled in English studies at Aarhus University, but later dropped out. Her first collection of poems, ''levende og lukket'', was published in 1985. Ida Jessen
Ida Jessen (born 25 September 1964 in Sønderjylland) is a Danish author and translator who writes in both Danish and Norwegian. Jessen was nominated for the Nordic Council's Literature Prize and has won several awards for her work. She is a member of the Danish Academy and a recipient of the Lifetime Award from the Danish Arts Foundation. Biography Jessen holds an M.A. in History of Literature and Communication from Aarhus University in 1990. Suzanne Brøgger
Suzanne Preis Brøgger Zeruneith (born 18 November 1944 in open) is a Danish writer, a novelist, poet and journalist. Her first book ''Fri os fra kærligheden'' has been translated into c. 20 languages. Since 1997 she has been a member of the Danish Academy. Early life Brøgger grew up in Denmark until she was fourteen, after that she moved abroad with her mother and her stepfather Svend Brøgger, who worked for UNICEF and was stationed in Colombo, Sri Lanka and later in Bangkok, Thailand. Suzanne Brøgger returned to Denmark to attend high school a couple of years later. She finished the Silkeborg Gymnasium (a secondary school) in 1964, and she then studied Russian and French at the University of Copenhagen.
