Daniel Spader Voorhees
Daniel Spader Voorhees Jr. (August 15, 1852 – August 12, 1935) was the New Jersey State Treasurer from 1907 to 1913. He was the superintendent of Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital. Biography He was born on August 15, 1852 in Somerville, New Jersey to Daniel Spader Voorhees, Sr. and Mary Louise Compton Doty. On January 18, 1874 he married Frances L. White (born January 18, 1856). She was the daughter of Margaret and William W. White of New Brunswick, New Jersey. In 1898 he was elected county clerk of Morris County. The New Jersey Senate convened on February 14, 1907 and appointed him as the New Jersey State Treasurer for a term of three years, to succeed Frank Obadiah Briggs. He started his term on March 1, 1907, and in 1910 was re-elected and served until 1913. He was succeeded by Edward Everett Grosscup. New Jersey Senate
The New Jersey Senate was established as the upper house of the New Jersey Legislature by the Constitution of 1844, replacing the Legislative Council. There are 40 legislative districts, representing districts with an average population of 232,225 (2020 figure). Each district has one senator and two members of the New Jersey General Assembly, the lower house of the legislature. Prior to the election in which they are chosen, senators must be a minimum of 30 years old and a resident of the state for four years to be eligible to serve in office. From 1844 until 1965 (when the ''Reynolds v. Sims'' US Supreme Court decision mandated all state legislators be elected from districts of roughly equal population), each county was an electoral district electing one senator. Under the 1844 Constitution, the term of office was three years, which was changed to four years with the 1947 Constitution. Edward Casper Stokes
Edward Casper Stokes (December 22, 1860November 4, 1942) was an American Republican Party politician, who served as the 32nd governor of New Jersey, from 1905 to 1908. Biography Stokes was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1860. He attended the Friends School in Rhode Island, and graduated from Brown University in 1883. Stokes was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1891, and was a member of the New Jersey Senate from Cumberland County between 1893 and 1901. He was the Governor between 1905 and 1908. Stokes made his first attempt at the United States Senate in 1902 after the death of William Joyce Sewell, but fell short in voting by the Republican caucus, losing out to John F. Dryden. Stokes won a narrow victory in the 1910 Republican primary for United States Senate, but two years before the direct election of Senators, Democrats controlled the legislature and Stokes was defeated.
