Daniel Oliver (botanist)
Daniel Oliver, FRS (6 February 1830, Newcastle upon Tyne – 21 December 1916) was an English botanist. He was Librarian of the Herbarium, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew from 1860–1890 and Keeper there from 1864–1890, and Professor of Botany at University College, London from 1861–1888. In 1864, while at UCL, he published ''Lessons in Elementary Biology'', based upon material left in manuscript by John Stevens Henslow, and illustrated by Henslow's daughter, Anne Henslow Barnard of Cheltenham. With a second edition in 1869 and a third in 1878 this book was reprinted until at least 1891. Oliver regarded this book as suitable for use in schools and for young people remote from the classroom and laboratory. He was elected a member of the Linnean Society, awarded their Gold Medal in 1893, and awarded a Royal Medal by the Royal Society in 1884. Daniel Oliver (physician)
Daniel Oliver (9 September 1787 – 1 June 1842) was an American physician. Oliver was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts, 9 September 1787; died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1 June 1842, was the son of Reverend Thomas Fitch Oliver and the great grandson of Andrew Oliver. He was graduated at Harvard in 1806, and at the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1810. He practiced for many years at Salem, Massachusetts, lectured on chemistry at Dartmouth in 1815–16, and in 1820 removed to Hanover, New Hampshire, having been appointed professor of the theory and practice of medicine, and of materia medica and therapeutics. In 1827–28 he lectured on the theory and practice of medicine at Bowdoin. In 1828 he took the chair also of intellectual philosophy at Dartmouth. He resigned his professorships in that college in 1837, and in 1841–42 was a professor in the medical college at Cincinnati, Ohio. Daniel Oliver (born March 10, 1939) is a former executive editor of ''National Review'' from 1973 to 1976 and chairman of the Federal Trade Commission from 1986 to 1990. He was chairman of the ''National Review'' board and a trustee of the magazine made so by William F. Buckley, Jr., founder of the publication. Background Oliver grew up in New York City. The Wake are a British post-punk, synth-pop and later indie pop band, formed in Glasgow in 1981 by Gerard "Caesar" McInulty (formerly of Altered Images), Steven Allen (drums) and Joe Donnelly (bass), the latter replaced by Bobby Gillespie. Steven's sister Carolyn Allen also joined on keyboards, and remained in the band thereafter. Gillespie left the band in 1983, replaced by Martin Cunning and then by Alexander 'Mac' Macpherson. History The Wake released their first single on their own Scan 45 label, coupling together "On Our Honeymoon" and "Give Up". This single eventually caught the attention of New Order (band), New Order manager Rob Gretton, who helped the band sign to Factory Records in 1982 and record an LP (''Harmony (The Wake album), Harmony'') at Strawberry Studios in Stockport.
