Daniel Aloysius Riley
Daniel Aloysius Riley (11 May 1916 – 13 September 1984) was a Canadian politician. Early life Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, he received a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1940. Career In 1949, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the New Brunswick riding of St. John—Albert. A Liberal, he was defeated in the 1953 election and again in the 1957 election. In 1963, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick and was the Liberal Minister of Lands and Forests in the Louis Robichaud cabinet. He resigned in 1966 and was appointed chairman of the New Brunswick Motor Carrier Board and Public Utilities Commission. Together with the Crown and the House of Commons, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. The Senate is modelled after the British House of Lords with members appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister. The explicit basis on which appointment is made and the chamber's size is set, at 105 members, is by province or territory assigned to 'divisions'. The Constitution divides provinces of Canada geographically among four regions, which are represented equally. 1957 Canadian Federal Election
The 1957 Canadian federal election was held June 10, 1957, to select the 265 members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 23rd Parliament of Canada. In one of the greatest upsets in Canadian political history, the Progressive Conservative Party (also known as "PCs" or "Tories"), led by John Diefenbaker, brought an end to 22 years of Liberal rule, as the Tories were able to form a minority government despite losing the popular vote to the Liberals. The Liberal Party had governed Canada since 1935, winning five consecutive elections. Under Prime Ministers William Lyon Mackenzie King and Louis St. Laurent, the government gradually built a welfare state. Louis Robichaud
Louis Joseph Robichaud (October 21, 1925 – January 6, 2005), popularly known as "Little Louis" or "P'tit-Louis", was the second (but first elected) Acadian premier of New Brunswick, serving from 1960 to 1970. With the Equal Opportunity program, the language rights act of 1969 establishing New Brunswick as an officially bilingual province, and for his role in the creation of the Université de Moncton, Robichaud is credited with ushering in major social reform in New Brunswick. The New Brunswick Liberal Association (french: Association libérale du Nouveau-Brunswick), more popularly known as the New Brunswick Liberal ''Party'' or Liberal Party of New Brunswick, is one of the two major provincial political parties in New Brunswick, Canada.
