Dangerbird Records
Dangerbird Records is an independent record label in Los Angeles, California. The label is home to artists from around the world and part of the burgeoning Silver Lake music scene. The label has had international success from its small roster of artists including Silversun Pickups, Fitz and the Tantrums, Sebadoh, Minus the Bear, and The Frights History The two founders represented different roles in the music industry. Jeff Castelaz had managed Feist, Phoenix, Citizen King, and others, while Peter Walker was a singer-songwriter. The label's first release: Walker's solo album ''Landed''. Their business approach includes a strong emphasis on artist development, and working with a network of partners to help the bands reach a wide market. In 2006, Dangerbird gained repute after releasing '' Carnavas'', the debut full-length album by Silversun Pickups, to sales of over 450,000. Jeff Castelaz
Jeff Castelaz founded Cast Management and co-founded The Pablove Foundation. He also Co-Founded and was CEO of Los Angeles-based Dangerbird Records, and was the president of Elektra Records. Career beginnings Castelaz began working in music in his hometown of Milwaukee, WI, writing about music for ''Milwaukee Magazine'', the local weekly newspaper ''Downtown Edition'', and the national music magazine ''Ray Gun''. In 1992 he began managing the band Wild Kingdom, which later reformed as Citizen King in 1993. Castelaz went on to help sign the band to MCA Records in 1994, and then to Warner Bros. Records where the band released their hit single "Better Days (And the Bottom Drops Out)" in 1999. By 2000, Castelaz had relocated to Los Angeles, CA and began to work with other artists and music producers before co-founding Dangerbird Records in 2004. Doug Wieselman
Douglas Joel Wieselman (born November 30, 1954) is an American composer and jazz reedist. He plays primarily clarinet and tenor saxophone, though he occasionally also plays soprano and baritone saxophone. Early life and education Wieselman was born in Los Angeles. He earned a bachelor's degree in music at University of California, Santa Cruz in 1976, where he first played with Wayne Horvitz; he played with Horvitz extensively into the 1990s. Career In 1982, Wieselman began working with Robin Holcomb, and played with her again from 1987 to 1996. In the late 1980s he also worked with Bill Frisell, Guy Klucevsek, and Anthony Coleman. He started his own group, the Kamikaze Ground Crew, in 1983, with Gina Leishman, and also co-founded the New York Composer's Orchestra in 1986. Swervedriver
Swervedriver are an English alternative rock band formed in Oxford in 1989 around core members Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge. Between 1989 and 1998, the band released four studio albums and numerous EPs and singles despite a considerable flux of members, managers, and record labels. By 1993 the band's lineup had settled with Franklin on vocals/guitar, Hartridge on guitar, Jez Hindmarsh on drums, and Steve George on bass. They had emerged with a heavier rock sound than their shoegaze contemporaries, and over the next five years it evolved to include elements of psychedelia, classic pop, and indie rock. Record label issues and waning interest within the group led to their split at the end of 1998. Spain are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1993, and led by singer/bassist Josh Haden. Their syncretic music contains elements of country, blues, folk, jazz, and slowcore. Slothrust ''(pronounced sloth-rust, IPA: '' slɔθ.rʌst') '' is an American alternative rock band from Boston, Massachusetts, formed in 2010. Background Slothrust consists of Leah Wellbaum (vocals, guitar) and Will Gorin (drums). Wellbaum and Gorin first began collaborating as students at Sarah Lawrence College. Sea Wolf (band)
Sea Wolf is an American band led by Alex Brown Church, an indie folk musician based in Los Angeles, California, United States. History Church attended film school at NYU and was a founding member of a group called Irving in 1998. Many of the songs he wrote as a member of Irving didn't fit the group's style, so Church began performing as Sea Wolf with a rotating ensemble of backing musicians, playing locally in Los Angeles and recording demos in Seattle with producer Phil Ek. Murray Lightburn
Murray A. Lightburn is a Canadian musician, best known as the lead vocalist and principal songwriter for The Dears. Lightburn has been called "the black Morrissey" due to his vocal similarity (and shared penchant for somewhat dark lyrics) to the former The Smiths lead singer. Incidentally, The Dears toured as Morrissey's opening act during Morrissey's solo tour in 2006. In 2013 he released the solo album ''Mass: Light''. Matthew Albert Costa (born June 16, 1982) is an American singer-songwriter from Huntington Beach, California, United States. He has 13 independent releases: 7 self-recorded EPs, 6 complete LPs, 4 of which are released via Brushfire Records. His first album in five years, ''Santa Rosa Fangs'', was released on May 18, 2018, on Dangerbird Records. Jason Lytle
Jason Lytle ( ; born March 26, 1969) is an American musician best known for his work in the indie rock group Grandaddy. The group split in 2005, and Lytle continued to release music as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians. Grandaddy reformed in 2012 and stopped recording and touring again in 2017 following the death of one of the members.
