Dancing Days (film)
''Dancing Days'' is a 1926 American silent drama film directed by Albert H. Kelley and starring Helene Chadwick, Forrest Stanley and Lillian Rich.Connelly p.336 It is based on the 1910 novel of the same name by the British writer J.J. Bell. The films depicts a married man who falls in love with a flapper, and is increasingly dominated by his new love interest. Synopsis After ten years of marriage to Alice, Ralph Hedman is introduced by his brother to the flapper Lillian Loring and his eye begins to wander. The new woman seems to have complete control over him. When he falls ill, she tries to recover him by getting him to dance the Charleston. Alice accepts defeat, but a chance car accident brings them back together. Sylvia Ashton
Sylvia Ashton (January 26, 1880 – November 18, 1940) was an American film actress of the silent film era. Ashton was born in Denver, Colorado. She bore a heavyset resemblance to Jane Darwell and like Darwell was playing mother and grandmother roles, though more famously than Darwell in the silents, while still in her 30s and 40s. In 1912, Ashton was an actress in D.W. Griffith's stock company. After that, she acted for Famous Players-Lasky. For years she was a regular member of Cecil B. DeMille's troupe of character actors. She appeared in more than 130 films between 1912 and 1929. She retired from movies almost immediately at the dawn of sound, one of her later films being the part-sound film ''The Barker'' (1928). Ashton died on November 18, 1940, aged 60. Flappers
Flappers were a subculture of young Western women in the 1920s who wore short skirts (knee height was considered short during that period), bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes in public, driving automobiles, treating sex in a casual manner, and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms. As automobiles became available, flappers gained freedom of movement and privacy. Flappers are icons of the Roaring Twenties, the social, political turbulence, and increased transatlantic cultural exchange that followed the end of World War I, as well as the export of American jazz culture to Europe. There was a reaction to this counterculture from more conservative people, who belonged mostly to older generations.
