Dana Zzyym
Dana Alix Zzyym (born 1958) is an intersex activist and veteran of the U.S. Navy. After the culmination of a six-year legal battle, they became the first U.S. citizen to receive an official U.S. passport with an “X” sex/gender marker. Early life Zzyym was born in 1958. Zzyym has expressed that their childhood as a military brat made it out of the question for them to be associated with the queer community as a youth due to the prevalence of homophobia in the armed forces. Their parents hid Zzyym's status as intersex from them and Zzyym discovered their identity and the surgeries their parents had approved for them by themselves after their Navy service. In 1978, Zzyym joined the Navy as a machinist's mate. Activism Zzyym is the associate director of the Intersex Campaign for Equality. They are nonbinary and intersex. Intersex Campaign For Equality
The Intersex Campaign for Equality (IC4E) is a NGO, non-governmental organization that advocates for the intersex human rights, human rights of intersex people. It was formerly the US affiliate of Organisation Intersex International. History and staff The Intersex Campaign for Equality was founded as an affiliate of Organisation Intersex International in February 2011. The founder and director is author and activist Hida Viloria. Dana Zzyym has been the associate director since February 19, 2015, when intersex activists Dani Lee Harris, Hida Viloria, and Zzyym re-branded the Intersex Campaign for Equality (IC4E). Elisa Rae Shupe
Elisa Rae Shupe (formerly Jamie Shupe; born James Clifford Shupe) is a retired United States Army soldier who in 2016 became the first person in the United States to obtain legal recognition of a non-binary gender. In 2019, she released a statement explaining that she had " returned to ermale birth sex." In 2022 she published a statement reclaiming her trans identity and condemning the anti-trans movement due to her story being used to push conversion therapy. Intersex People And Military Service In The United States
The regulations regarding the service of intersex people in the United States Armed Forces are vague and inconsistent due to the broad nature of humans with intersex conditions. The United States Armed Forces as a whole does not officially ban intersex people from service but does exclude many based on the form of their status. Policies regarding all intersex people are not addressed formally although depending on the type of sex variation some intersex people are allowed to serve. The United States military and their requirements for service makes it so they are frequently in a unique predicament when it comes to intersex bodies. With their position of needing to discern between male and female bodies, they are exposed to a broad variety of people, such as those who are intersex whose bodies may not match either classification and are more difficult to make decisions on.
