Dana Colley
Dana Colley (born October 17, 1961) is an American musician, best known as the baritone and tenor saxophonist in the alternative rock band Morphine. Early life Colley was born in Portland, Maine, but he was raised in Hanson, Massachusetts, where he took up the clarinet in the 4th grade, switching to tenor sax in 7th. He picked up the baritone sax in 1984. Musical career With Three Colors (1985–1988) Colley originally appeared in the Boston, Massachusetts indie rock scene playing with the group Three Colors, a post-punk band formed in 1981 whom he joined in 1985. While Colley established himself as primarily a saxophonist, he also played harmonica with the group. After modest success behind several small-run records and a brief relocation to Princeton, New Jersey, the group disbanded in late 1988. Jeremy Lyons (born March 24, 1970) is an American musician, currently based in Massachusetts. Musical career Jeremy Lyons began his professional music career playing blues guitar and singing on the streets of New Orleans, and went on to make a name for himself in that town by blending elements of rockabilly and delta blues with the Deltabilly Boys. Subsequent to the disaster created by Hurricane Katrina, he resettled to the Boston area and eventually diversified his career to encompass rock, folk, jug band, children's music and education. Lyons was born in Ithaca, New York, United States. As a teenager, he learned from friends and first studied guitar with British folk musician Martin Simpson in Ithaca. After moving to New Orleans in 1992, he made his living playing in the streets with the Big Mess Blues Band for five years. Woodblock printing or block printing is a technique for printing text, images or patterns used widely throughout East Asia and originating in China in antiquity as a method of printing on textiles and later paper. Formation Guitarist Stuart Kimball (born December 21, 1956) formed the band with close friends in New Hampshire during the late 1970s. ''The Night'' is the fifth and final studio album by the alternative rock band Morphine, released in 2000 via DreamWorks. The album expands the band's sound beyond their usual arrangements of previous albums (bass, saxophone and drums), introducing acoustic guitars, organs, strings and female backing vocals. The album peaked at No. 137 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Production Jerome Deupree, the band's original drummer, who had previously quit due to health problems, rejoined as a guest playing alongside Billy Conway, according to credits listed in the CD booklet, thus making ''The Night'' Morphine's first album recorded as a quartet rather than a trio. Recording sessions for the album were completed shortly before the sudden July 1999 death of bass player and lead singer Mark Sandman; Conway and saxophonist Dana Colley oversaw the final mixing process. ''Like Swimming'' is the fourth studio album by the alternative rock band Morphine, released in March 1997 by DreamWorks/Rykodisc. It was Morphine's first album (out of two) released as part of their multi-album deal with DreamWorks and the last album released within the lifetime of singer and bassist Mark Sandman. Background After releasing three albums for indie label Rykodisc between 1992 and 1995, Morphine wanted to leave the label in 1996 and sign with DreamWorks. Since the band still owed Rykodisc two albums, the two labels negotiated a deal where ''Like Swimming'' would carry branding of both labels in North America, and Rykodisc would have the rights for the rest of the world. Billy Conway (drummer)
Billy Conway (December 18, 1956 – December 19, 2021) was an American drummer best known for his work with Treat Her Right and Morphine. From 2013, he toured as a duo with Jeffrey Foucault. In recent years, he had also backed Chris Smither. A stripped-down approach characterized his bands, equipment, and playing. Background Conway was a native of Owatonna, Minnesota, south of Minneapolis. In the 1970s, he attended Yale University, where he became friends and bandmates with harmonica player Jim Fitting, who would also become part of Treat Her Right. Conway earned a degree in psychology. A member of the Class of 1979, he was captain of Yale's ice hockey team as a senior in the 1978–79 season. He was invited to try out for the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, which performed the "Miracle on Ice", but could not after tearing a knee ligament. ''Good'' is the first album by the Boston-based alternative rock trio Morphine. It was released in 1992 on the Accurate/Distortion label. It was reissued by Rykodisc in 1993 after the band signed with the label. Critical reception ''Trouser Press'' wrote that the album "establishes the goods, excavating a slippery, sultry groove that suggests blues and bebop without becoming either by providing ample room in the spacious mix for two evocative voices."
