Umayyad Square
Umayyad Square ( ar, ساحة الأمويين / ALA-LC: ''sāḥat al-Umawiyīn'') is a large and important square in Damascus, Syria. It connects the city center with several important highways and areas and contains various important buildings including but not limited to the Ministry of Defense, Syria's national Opera house and the headquarters of the Syrian Armed Forces. The Damascene Sword monument, widely considered as the symbol of the city, stands in the square, and is considered a symbol and reminder "of the victories, strength and achievements of the Syrian people". The name of the square is a reference to the Umayyads who took Damascus as the capital of their caliphate in the 7th century. Malek Jandali
Malek Jandali ( ar, مالك جندلي, ) (born 1972) is a German-born Syrian-American pianist and composer. He is the founder of the nonprofit organization Pianos for Peace, which aims to build peace through music and education. Jandali immigrated to the United States and studied music in North Carolina. Since then, he has performed with orchestras across the world and composed a number of modern classical works. His music was described as "a major new addition to the 21st century symphonic literature" by Fanfare Magazine with "heart-rending melodies, lush orchestration, clever transitions and creative textures", according to American Record Guide. Jandali's music ranges from chamber works to large symphonic compositions integrating Middle-Eastern and Western influences. The history of opera in the Arabic-speaking world is generally viewed to have started from the premiere of Verdi's ''Aida'' in Cairo at the Khedivial Opera House in 1871, though Verdi's opera was sung in Italian. Western operas sung in Arabic Ratiba El-Hefny sung the title role in Cairo in Lehár's ''The Merry Widow'' in Arabic in 1961.
