Joseph-François-Louis-Charles De Damas
Duke Joseph François Louis Charles de Damas (28 October 1758 – 5 March 1829 in Paris) was a French general. As a colonel, he was aide-de-camp to the commander in chief of the French Expeditionary Force in the American Revolution from 1780 to 1781. After his return, he was given the command over a dragoon regiment. In June 1791, he was entrusted to cover the escape of King Louis XVI, but left his regiment and joined the king in Varennes, where he was arrested. Sentenced to death in Paris, he was pardoned and followed the Comte d'Artois to Italy, was named '' maréchal de camp'' in 1795 and was en route to join the Quiberon expedition, when he was shipwrecked in Calais and was captured by the Republicans. Under the Consulate, he was again pardoned, accompanied Artois as general adjudant to Ile-Dieu, served from 1797 to 1801 in the Prince de Condé's émigré army. Ladies in White ( es, italics=no, Damas de Blanco) is an opposition movement in Cuba founded in 2003 by wives and other female relatives of jailed dissidents and those who have been made to disappear by the government. The women protest the imprisonments by attending Mass each Sunday wearing white dresses and then silently walking through the streets dressed in white clothing. The color white is chosen to symbolize peace. The movement received the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought from the European Parliament in 2005. Vítor Manuel Afonso Damas de Oliveira (8 October 1947 – 13 September 2003), known as Damas, was a Portuguese footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Miguel Gómez Damas (5 June 1785 – 11 June 1849) was a Spanish Carlist general of the First Carlist War. Born at Torredonjimeno, in the province of Jaén, he served under the Carlist general Zumalacárregui and in 1836 undertook an unsuccessful military expedition against Liberal forces in various locations, including Asturias, Galicia, Extremadura, Andalusia, and La Mancha, but suffered defeats. Léon-Gontran Damas (March 28, 1912 – January 22, 1978) was a French poet and politician. He was one of the founders of the Négritude movement. He also used the pseudonym Lionel Georges André Cabassou. Biography Léon Damas was born in Cayenne, French Guiana, to Ernest Damas, a mulatto of European and African descent, and Bathilde Damas, a Metisse of Native American and African ancestry. In 1924, Damas was sent to Martinique to attend the Lycée Victor Schoelcher (a secondary school), where he would meet his lifelong friend and collaborator Aimé Césaire. In 1929, Damas moved to Paris to continue his studies. While he studied law under guidance from his parents, his diverse array of courses in other topics like anthropology, history, and literature sparked his interest in radical politics.
