Carl Balhaus (born Carl Ballhaus; 4 November 1905 – 28 July 1968) was a German stage and film actor. After the Second World War he worked as screenwriter and director for the East German state-owned studio DEFA. East German Films
This is a list, in year order, of the most notable films produced in the Soviet Occupation Zone of Germany and the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) from 1945 until German Reunification in October 1990. The state owned East German film company DEFA produced about 800 feature films between 1946 and 1992. Besides DEFA, the state broadcaster DFF and the Deutsche Hochschule für Filmkunst (now the Filmuniversität Babelsberg) were the only other organizations in the GDR that produced feature films for cinematic release, although far fewer than DEFA. DEFA also produced about 750 animated movies and more than 2500 documentaries and short films. DEFA feature films are accessible and licensable as part of DEFA's entire film heritage on the PROGRESS archive platform. Horst Fritz Otto Giese (31 January 1926 – 29 December 2008) was an East German actor. Biography In 1945, Giese made his debut on stage at his native Neuruppin, then in the Soviet occupation zone. Later he appeared on television. His first role in a movie was at the 1954 ''Alarm in the Circus'' (''Alarm in Zirkus''). He performed in some 50 films and television productions, and is known for his portrayals of Joseph Goebbels in several films, including in the five-part series ''Liberation'', film ''Soldiers of Freedom'', the two-part Bulgarian production ''Anvil or Hammer'' and in the Czechoslovak comedy ''Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea''. Giese had a long correspondence with actor Klaus Kinski, who has once visited him in East Berlin during 1956. Wolfgang Kieling
Wolfgang Kieling (16 March 1924 – 7 October 1985) was a German actor. Biography In films since childhood in his native Germany, Kieling appeared in a few American films, notably in Alfred Hitchcock's ''Torn Curtain'' (1966), where he played Gromek, an East German agent brutally slain by Paul Newman's character. He also played Gromek's brother in a scene that was deleted from the final print. Kieling had a small role in '' $'' (aka, ''The Heist'', 1971), starring Warren Beatty. In a British film, ''Amsterdam Affair'' (1968), he portrayed the fictional Dutch detective Van der Valk several years before Barry Foster (another Hitchcock alumnus) was cast in the same role for the British TV series.
