Dallas Sidekicks (1984–2004)
The Dallas Sidekicks were one of the longest operating professional soccer teams, either indoor or outdoor, in the United States, based in Dallas, Texas, and operating from 1984 until suspending operations following the 2003-04 season. The team was founded as a member of the original Major Indoor Soccer League. Over the years, the team played in four other leagues ( CISL, WISL, PSA, and the second incarnation of the MISL). The team's most famous player was Tatu, who was known for throwing his shirt into the stands after every goal. The team hosted the 1989 MISL All-Star Game. The team was one of the most successful franchises in indoor soccer history, making the playoffs in 16 of their 19 seasons of play. Reunion Arena
Reunion Arena was an indoor arena located in the Reunion district of downtown Dallas, Texas. The arena served as the primary home of the National Hockey League's Dallas Stars and the National Basketball Association's Dallas Mavericks. The venue's capacity held accommodations for 17,000 for ice hockey spectators, and 18,190 for basketball spectators. Reunion was also a performance venue for some of the biggest names in popular music from the 1980s through the late 2000s including Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Prince, Van Halen, Frank Sinatra, Elton John, David Bowie, Madonna, Gloria Estefan, Mötley Crüe, Pink Floyd, Queen, Journey (band) U2, R.E.M. and Radiohead. Doc Lawson
Aldophus "Doc" Lawson (born February 11, 1958, in Liberia) is a former American soccer defender best known for his long indoor career. Lawson played the third most games in the history of the original MISL. He also spent four seasons in the North American Soccer League. Known for his tenacious defending, Doc earned the nickname, The Indoor Warrior. Lawson earned three caps with the U.S. national team in 1979, was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic soccer team and was with the U.S. Futsal team when it took third place in the 1989 FIFA Futsal World Championship. David Doyle (soccer)
David Doyle (born August 8, 1965) is an Irish soccer forward who spent seventeen seasons playing indoor soccer in the United States. He was the 1987–1988 Major Indoor Soccer League Rookie of the Year, was the 1996 and 1999 indoor soccer scoring champion and a six time first team All Star. College Doyle attended Campbell University where he played on the men's soccer team from 1983 to 1986. He led the country in scoring, with 34 goals, as a senior. He finished his career 72 goals and 19 assists for a school record 286 points. He was a 1986 second team All American and was inducted into the Campbell Hall of Fame in 2006. Wes McLeod
Wes McLeod (born October 24, 1957) is a retired Canadian soccer player who earned eighteen caps with the Canadian national soccer team. Club career Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, McLeod spent his youth career with Coquitlam Blue Mountain. In 1976, he moved to Vancouver Columbus FC (Italia). In 1977 McLeod signed with Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League. Over eight seasons with the Rowdies, he was selected to the NASL's North American All-Star team in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982, a record six times. In August 1984, he signed with the New York Cosmos of the Major Indoor Soccer League. In February 1985, the Cosmos withdrew from the league and, McLeod signed with the Dallas Sidekicks on February 25, 1985. Mike Powers (soccer)
Mike Powers is a retired American soccer midfielder who played sixteen years with the Dallas Sidekicks. He also played in the second American Soccer League and the United Soccer League. Player Youth Powers attended Rockhurst University, playing for the men/s soccer team from 1975 to 1980. He is a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. Professional In 1979, the Wichita Wings selected Powers in the Territorial Round (10th overall) of the Major Indoor Soccer League Draft. He played from 1980 to 1983 with the Wings. In addition to playing indoors with the Wings, Powers also played three seasons, from 1981 to 1983 with the Detroit Express of the American Soccer League. The Express won the 1982 ASL championship. Billy Phillips
Billy Phillips (born August 9, 1956 in Long Island, New York) is a former U.S. soccer goalkeeper who played three seasons in the North American Soccer League, six in the Major Indoor Soccer League and later coached the Dallas Sidekicks for two seasons. College Phillips was the youngest of five children.. He attended Nassau County Community College where he was named a soccer All-American. He then transferred to Adelphi University where he was a two-sport athlete, both running track and playing soccer. He earned a bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 1978. He still holds the school track record in the 1500 meter (3:46.1), the mile (4:02) and the two-mile relay. He earned All-American honors in 1978 when he finished third in the NCAA Championships for the 1500 meters. Gordon Harold Jago (born 22 October 1932) is an English former football player and manager, and the former director of the Dr. Pepper Dallas Cup international youth tournament. Playing career Born in Poplar, London, Jago began his professional career as a center back in the Football League at Charlton Athletic, with whom he joined in the 1954–55 season from non-league team Dulwich Hamlet. Prior to Charlton, he played in six full internationals as a member of the England U20 squad. He made a total of 147 appearances for Charlton, scoring one goal, at The Valley. Monterrey La Raza (1992–2001)
The original Monterrey La Raza ( es, La Raza de Monterrey) was a professional indoor soccer team based in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. The team was founded on December 29, 1992 as a member of the Continental Indoor Soccer League. After the CISL folded, the La Raza took one season off and attempted to join the National Professional Soccer League before joining the World Indoor Soccer League in 1999. The team folded after it was expelled from the WISL before the 2001 season due to the lack of progress on building Arena Monterrey. Don Carter (businessman)
Donald J. Carter (July 5, 1933 – February 14, 2018) was an American investor and businessman who was a founding owner of the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Dallas Sidekicks of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL).Aron (2003), p. 4–6.
