Dalkey, South Australia
Dalkey is a locality in the Mid North of South Australia. It was established as a private subdivision of section 171 in the Hundred of Dalkey on the main road from Adelaide to Balaklava. It is named for the Hundred of Dalkey which in turn was named after Dalkey in Ireland. The boundaries of the locality were defined in 2000 for the long-established name. History The Dalkey area was initially used for pasture, but soon settlers found it good for growing wheat, which was carted by horse or bullock wagons to Port Wakefield for further shipment. Dalkey post office opened in 1866 and closed in 1910. When German farmers settled in the area in the 1860s, their settlement was known as Sichem. A Lutheran school was built in 1868, also used as a place of worship until a separate church building was constructed between 1872 and 1875. Balaklava, South Australia
The town of Balaklava (population 2048, postcode 5461) is located in South Australia, 92 kilometres north of Adelaide in the Mid North region. It is on the south bank of the Wakefield River, east of Port Wakefield. History Since prehistoric times the Balaklava district has been near the boundaries of the Kaurna and Peramangk peoples. The first Europeans to traverse the district were John Hill and Thomas Burr on 29 April 1840. They discovered Diamond Lake and encamped near Owen. The first European settlers in the area were James and Mary Dunn who in 1850 opened a hotel to service bullock teamsters carting copper ore upon the Gulf Road between the Burra mine and the export port of Port Wakefield. The Gulf Road copper ore traffic came to a sudden end in 1857 when a railway connected Gawler to Port Adelaide which provided a more economic path for exporting the ore. German Schools In South Australia
During World War I, Australia experienced strong anti-German sentiment. South Australia had a substantial diaspora of German-speaking people derived from migrants from Germany and Poland during the 19th century. One of the consequences of the sentiment was that many German-sounding placenames were changed. Another consequence was that many Lutheran church schools which taught the children in German were encouraged and eventually forced to close or be taken over by the state. The Colony of South Australia had been established in 1836. The first groups of German emigrants arrived in 1838, encouraged by the founders of the colony. They were escaping religious persecution in Prussia, and settling to establish a new life where they were free to practice their religion. Owen, South Australia
Owen (postcode 5460) is a rural community in the heart of the Adelaide Plains. Owen is above sea-level and receives a reliable 416 mm (about 16.5 inches) of rain annually and was first settled in about 1865. It is about 80 km north of Adelaide in South Australia and is approximately 40 minutes by road to the nearest main regional centre of Gawler. It is in the Wakefield Regional Council. Establishment Owen was gazetted as a town on 1 May 1879 in conjunction with the construction of the Balaklava railway line between Hamley Bridge and Balaklava. There was a second railway siding about northwest of the Government Town of Owen named Woods. The small village by this station is now considered to be part of Owen. The District Council of Dalkey was a local government area seated at Owen in South Australia from 1875 to 1932. History The District Council of Dalkey was officially proclaimed as incorporating the entire Hundred of Dalkey on 25 March 1875. The five inaugural councillors appointed on the date of the proclamation were John Fisher, Edward George Gibbs, Isaiah Hill, Richard Keane Spotswood, and Gottlieb Trager. In 1882 a council chamber was opened for the Dalkey council in Owen. The Dalkey council ceased to exist in 1932 when it was amalgamated with the District Council of Alma Plains to form the new District Council of Owen, but the new council seat was kept at Owen. Port Wakefield, South Australia
Port Wakefield (formerly Port Henry) is a town at the mouth of the River Wakefield, at the head of the Gulf St Vincent in South Australia. It was the first government town to be established north of the state capital, Adelaide. Port Wakefield is situated from the Adelaide city centre on the Port Wakefield Highway section of the A1 National Highway. Port Wakefield is a major stop on the Adelaide – Yorke Peninsula and Adelaide – Port Augusta road routes. Dalkey
Dalkey ( ; ) is an affluent suburb of Dublin, and a seaside resort southeast of the city, and the town of Dún Laoghaire, in the county of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown in the historic County Dublin, Ireland. Hundred Of Dalkey
The Hundred of Dalkey is a cadastral unit of hundred located on the northern Adelaide Plains in South Australia, immediately south of the Wakefield River. It is one of the eight hundreds of the County of Gawler. It was named in 1856 by Governor Richard Graves MacDonnell for his hometown Dalkey, a seaside resort in Ireland. The eastern outskirts of the township of Balaklava spills over the western boundary of the hundred (from the Hundred of Balaklava).
