Dalene Matthee
Dalene Matthee (13 October 1938 – 20 February 2005) was a South African author best known for her four "Forest Novels", written in and around the Knysna Forest. Her books have been translated into fourteen languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew and Icelandic, and over a million copies have been sold worldwide. Biography She was born Dalena Scott in Riversdale in the then Cape Province in 1938. After graduating from the local high school in 1957, she studied music at a conservatory in Oudtshoorn as well as at the Holy Cross Covent in Graaff-Reinet. Her first book was a children's story, ''Die Twaalfuurstokkie'' (The Twelve-o'-clock Stick), published in 1970. In 1982 a collection of short stories called ''Die Judasbok'' (The Judas Goat) was also published. Riversdale, Western Cape
Riversdale ( af, Riversdal) is a town located on the N2 (South Africa), N2 highway between Cape Town and George, Western Cape, George on the Agulhas Coastal Plain of the southern Western Cape province of South Africa. It is an agricultural service oriented town, being a hub for shopping and other services for surrounding farming communities, smaller towns, and coastal resorts, like Witsand and Stilbaai. It is located beneath the imposing Langeberg Mountains to the north, with Sleeping Beauty Mountain overlooking the town. ''Circles in a Forest'' is a novel by Dalene Matthee, originally written and published in Afrikaans as ''Kringe in 'n Bos'' in 1984. It is the first book in her series of four "forest novels", set in the Knysna forest. Knysna Elephants
The Knysna elephants were the relicts of once substantial herds of African bush elephant (''Loxodonta africana'') in the Outeniqua/ Tsitsikamma region of southernmost South Africa. As of 2022, the herds have been reduced to a lone adult female. The elephant herds roamed the southern tip of Africa into the 1800s and 1900s, when contact with European farmers and hunters led to their decimation. It is conjectured that about 1,000 elephants historically roamed the Outeniqua/Tsitsikamma area. A 2006 DNA analysis of dung samples revealed the presence of at least 5 cows and possibly some bulls and calves, moving within an area of 121,000 hectares of forest managed by SANParks – the only unfenced elephant group in South Africa. However, by 2019, researchers realised that a mature female at the Knysna Forest was the last to survive.
