DakhaBrakha is a Ukrainian folk music quartet which combines the musical styles of several ethnic groups. It was a winner of the in 2009 and the Shevchenko National Prize in 2020. DakhaBrakha is a project of the Dakh Contemporary Arts Center, led by Vladyslav Troitskyi and born as a live theater music crew. Troitskyi continues to be the band's producer. Members of DakhaBrakha participate in the centre's other projects, notably in the all-female cabaret project ''Dakh Daughters'', as well as in the annual Gogolfest festival. Dakh Contemporary Arts Center
The Dakh Contemporary Arts Center is an independent theater and musical venue in Kyiv, Ukraine, on Velyka Vasylkivska Street near the Lybidska metro station. The theater opened in 1994 and its first director was Vladimir Ohloblin. Since opening, the theater has been home to numerous groups including DakhaBrakha, Dakh Daughters, NovaOpera, and CESHO. Today, the theater is led by Vladislav Troitsky. General information The Dakh Theater is located in the Holosiivskyi district on Lybidska Square near the Lybidska metro station. The theater is located on the ground floor of a multi-storey building. Performances in Russian and Ukrainian are staged in the theater. GOGOLFEST ( uk, Гогольфест) is an annual multidisciplinary international festival of contemporary art and cinema in Kyiv, Ukraine, dedicated to the famous writer Mykola Gogol. The festival showcases theater, music, film, literature, and visual art. Background GOGOLFEST was founded in 2007 on the private initiative of Vladislav Troitsky, director and producer of the DAKh Center for Contemporary Art. The co-founder of the Festival and Chairman of its Board of Trustees is Evgeni Utkin, a prominent Ukrainian IT entrepreneur. Ukrainian-Russian writer Nikolai Gogol is the festival’s namesake. Zgaleyka
The ''zhaleika'' (russian: жале́йка), also known as bryolka (''брёлка''), is the Slavic wind instrument, most used in Belarusian, Russian and sometimes Ukrainian ethnic music. Also known as a "folk clarinet" or hornpipe. The zhaleika was eventually incorporated into the balalaika band, the Hungarian tarogato, and may have contributed to the development of the chalumeau, a predecessor of the clarinet. Construction and design The zhaleika consists of a single reed that can be covered by a mouthpiece (or "wind cap"). The design consists of a wooden barrel (pipe) with finger holes and a flared bell that can be made of either natural or man-made materials. It can either consist of a single or a double pipe. Dakh Daughters
Dakh Daughters is a Ukrainian music and theatre project started in 2012 in Kyiv. The band consists of seven women, who play on various instruments and sing in different languages (Ukrainian, English, French, German, Russian) and dialects of Ukrainian.''Борис Барабанов'Украина на все голоса. Wladyslaw Jurijowytsch Trojizky ( uk, Владислав Юрійович Троїцький; scientific transliteration ; also Vladislav Troitsky, or Vlad Troitsky, as his name is most often spelled in Western Europe; born November 26, 1964, in Ulan-Ude, Buryat ASSR) is a Ukrainian theater actor, theater director, dramaturge and radio host of Russian descent, who has received the Shevchenko National Prize for his requiem opera IYOV (Hiob) in 2020. ''Bitter Harvest'' is a 2017 period romantic-drama film set in Soviet Ukraine in the early 1930s. The film is the first English language feature film depicting Ukraine's 1932/33 famine known as the Holodomor, a period of massive famines that killed millions of mostly ethnic Ukrainians.
