Dakahlia Governorate ( ar, محافظة الدقهلية ', ) is an Egyptian governorate lying northeast of Cairo. Its area is approximately 3,500 km2. Although the capital of the governorate is Mansoura, it got its name from the ancient town of Daqahlah (, from ) which is located in the modern Damietta Governorate. History Archaeology According to the Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities, in February, 2020, Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered 83 tombs dating back to 4,000 B.C known as Naqada III period. Various small pottery pots in different shapes and some sea shells, makeup tools, eyeliner pots, and jewels were also revealed in the burial. In April 2021, Egyptian archeologists announced the discovery of 110 burial tombs at the Koum el-Khulgan archeological site. 68 oval-shaped tombs of them dated back to the Predynastic Period and 37 rectangular-shaped tombs were from Second Intermediate Period. Timay al-Imdid ( ar, تمي الإمديد ', cop, ⲑⲙⲟⲩⲓ ⲡϭⲓⲙⲉⲛⲧⲏϯ ' ''pčhimentēti''), the ancient Thmuis and Mendes, is a city and markaz in Dakahlia Governorate of Egypt. The estimated population of the markaz in 2019 was 201,956, with 19,366 living in urban areas and 182,590 in rural areas. Name The name ''Timayy'' is derived from the Coptic word ⲑⲙⲟⲩ ''tmoui'', meaning "island", a fairly common Coptic place name element. In this case it is an abbreviation of Demotic ''tꜣ-mꜣw.t-n-pr-bꜣ-nb-ḏd.t'' "the island of Mendes". Sherbin ( ) is a town in Egypt, located in the governorate of Dakahlia. Etymology The word means "cypress" in Classical Arabic. Mit Ghamr ( ar, ميت غمر, ) is an Egyptian center producing aluminium accounting for more than 70% of Egypt's total production, especially aluminum utensils. It is a city in Dakahlia Governorate, where it is second only to Al Mansurah in population and importance. Geography Mit Ghamr is located on Damietta branch of the Nile, and just on the opposite side of the Nile located another city called Zifta which belongs to Gharbia Governorate. Belqas ( ar, بلقاس, ) is a town located in the north-western corner of the Dakahlia Governorate in Egypt. Etymology The towns older name is al-Mima wa-l-Maaskar () points out that the modern name probably comes from . It is also a site of the old Coptic monastery called Deir al-Mema or Deir al-Askar.
