Daisy Hooee
Daisy Hooee Nampeyo (1906 or 1910 - 1994 or 1998) was a Hopi-Tewa potter. She studied at École des Beaux-Arts. Hooee taught pottery making on the Zuni reservation and helped preserve the traditional techniques she learned from her grandmother, Nampeyo. Biography Hooee was a Hopi-Tewa potter and was born in 1906 or 1910. Hooee grew up in Hano, First Mesa, Arizona. She was a granddaughter of Nampeyo and the daughter of Nampeyo’s daughter, Annie Healing. She learned to paint pottery from her grandmother before she was ten years old. Hooee discovered that she had cataracts and might go blind around age ten while she was attending Phoenix Indian School. Anita Baldwin, an arts patron, provided surgery for Hooee in California and then went on to give her a formal education. Nampeyo
Nampeyo (1859 – 1942) was a Hopi-Tewa potter who lived on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. Her Tewa name was also spelled Num-pa-yu, meaning "snake that does not bite". Her name is also cited as "Nung-beh-yong," Tewa for Sand Snake. She used ancient techniques for making and firing pottery and used designs from "Old Hopi" pottery and sherds found at 15th-century Sikyátki ruins on First Mesa. Her artwork is in collections in the United States and Europe, including many museums like the National Museum of American Art, Museum of Northern Arizona, Spurlock Museum, and the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. A world record for Southwest American Indian pottery was declared at Bonhams Auction House in San Francisco on December 6, 2010, when one of Nampeyo's art works, a decorated ceramic pot, sold for $350,000. Clay
Clay is a type of fine-grained natural soil material containing clay minerals (hydrous aluminium phyllosilicates, e.g. kaolin, Al2 Si2 O5( OH)4). Clays develop plasticity when wet, due to a molecular film of water surrounding the clay particles, but become hard, brittle and non–plastic upon drying or firing.
