DVB-IPTV
IP over DVB implies that Internet Protocol datagrams are distributed using some digital television system, for example DVB-H, DVB-T, DVB-S, DVB-C or their successors like DVB-S2. This may take the form of IP over MPEG, where the datagrams are transferred over the MPEG transport stream, or the datagrams may be carried in the DVB baseband frames directly, as in GSE. Application examples * Data broadcast (datacast), for example a data carousel sending programme information and media over and over again. * IP multicast, for sending media efficiently to a limited group of subscribing users, using only the transmitter towers where users for the moment are situated. * interactive TV services * To provide internet access by utilizing the DVB system as a broadband downlink, in combination with some narrow-band duplex system. Examples: ** Satellite Internet access, e.g. to buildings in the countryside, using a telephone modem as the back-channel ** Broadband Internet access to trains ** M ...

Digital Video Broadcasting
Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) is a set of international open standards for digital television. DVB standards are maintained by the DVB Project, an international industry consortium, and are published by a Joint Technical Committee (JTC) of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Transmission DVB systems distribute data using a variety of approaches, including: * Satellite: DVB-S, DVB-S2, and DVB-SH ** DVB-SMATV for distribution via SMATV * Cable: DVB-C, DVB-C2 * Terrestrial television: DVB-T, DVB-T2 ** Digital terrestrial television for handhelds: DVB-H, DVB-SH * Microwave: using DTT ( DVB-MT), the MMDS ( DVB-MC), and/or MVDS standards (DVB-MS) These standards define the physical layer and data link layer of the distribution system. Devices interact with the physical layer via a synchronous parallel interface (SPI), synchronous serial i ...

Internet Protocol
The Internet Protocol (IP) is the network layer communications protocol in the Internet protocol suite for relaying datagrams across network boundaries. Its routing function enables internetworking, and essentially establishes the Internet. IP has the task of delivering packets from the source host to the destination host solely based on the IP addresses in the packet headers. For this purpose, IP defines packet structures that encapsulate the data to be delivered. It also defines addressing methods that are used to label the datagram with source and destination information. IP was the connectionless datagram service in the original Transmission Control Program introduced by Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn in 1974, which was complemented by a connection-oriented service that became the basis for the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). The Internet protocol suite is therefore often referred to as ''TCP/IP''. The first major version of IP, Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4), is the do ...

Plain Old Telephone Service
Plain old telephone service (POTS), or plain ordinary telephone system, is a retronym for voice-grade telephone service employing analog signal transmission over copper loops. POTS was the standard service offering from telephone companies from 1876 until 1988 in the United States when the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Basic Rate Interface (BRI) was introduced, followed by cellular telephone systems, and voice over IP (VoIP). POTS remains the basic form of residential and small business service connection to the telephone network in many parts of the world. The term reflects the technology that has been available since the introduction of the public telephone system in the late 19th century, in a form mostly unchanged despite the introduction of Touch-Tone dialing, electronic telephone exchanges and fiber-optic communication into the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Characteristics POTS is characterized by several aspects: *Bi-directional (full duplex) comm ...

DVB-MHP
Multimedia Home Platform (DVB-MHP) is an open middleware system standard designed by the DVB project for interactive digital television. The MHP enables the reception and execution of interactive, Java-based applications on a TV-set. Interactive TV applications can be delivered over the broadcast channel, together with audio and video streams. These applications can be for example information services, games, interactive voting, e-mail, SMS or shopping. MHP applications can use an additional return channel that has to support IP. Deployment In May 2010 the largest deployments DVB-MHP are in Italy (DVB-T), Korea ( DVB-S), Belgium ( DVB-C) and Poland ( DVB-S) with trials or small deployments in Germany, Spain, Austria, Colombia, Uruguay and Australia. MHP service was also offered in Finland by Finnish Broadcasting Corporation (Yleisradio), but the service was shut down at the end of 2007 after technical failure. The shutdown wasn't ever officially announced. Ultimately the reaso ...

Open Standard
An open standard is a standard that is openly accessible and usable by anyone. It is also a prerequisite to use open license, non-discrimination and extensibility. Typically, anybody can participate in the development. There is no single definition, and interpretations vary with usage. The terms ''open'' and ''standard'' have a wide range of meanings associated with their usage. There are a number of definitions of open standards which emphasize different aspects of openness, including the openness of the resulting specification, the openness of the drafting process, and the ownership of rights in the standard. The term "standard" is sometimes restricted to technologies approved by formalized committees that are open to participation by all interested parties and operate on a consensus basis. The definitions of the term ''open standard'' used by academics, the European Union, and some of its member governments or parliaments such as Denmark, France, and Spain preclude open standard ...

Datacasting
Datacasting (data broadcasting) is the broadcasting of data over a wide area via radio waves. It most often refers to supplemental information sent by television stations along with digital terrestrial television (DTT), but may also be applied to digital signals on analog TV or radio. It generally does not apply to data which is inherent to the medium, such as PSIP data which defines virtual channels for DTT or direct broadcast satellite systems; or to things like cable modem or satellite modem, which use a completely separate channel for data. Overview Datacasting often provides news, weather, traffic, stock market, and other information which may or may not relate to the programs it is carried with. It may also be interactive, such as gaming, shopping, or education. An electronic program guide is usually included, although this stretches the definition somewhat, as this is often considered inherent to the digital broadcast standard. The ATSC, DVB and ISDB standards ...

Unidirectional Lightweight Encapsulation
The Unidirectional Lightweight Encapsulation (ULE) is a Data link layer protocol for the transportation of network layer packets over MPEG transport streams. Because of the very low protocol overhead, it is especially suited for IP over Satellite services (where every bit counts). Such a system is for example DVB-S. However, ULE can also be used in the context of DVB-C and DVB-T, theoretically in every system which is based on MPEG transport streams (e.g., ATSC). ULE has been engineered by the IP over DVB (ipdvb) working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and has been standardized in RFC 4326. Another encapsulation method is Multiprotocol Encapsulation (MPE) which was developed and standardized by the DVB project. See also * MPEG-2 * Generic Stream Encapsulation (GSE) * Multiprotocol Encapsulation (MPE) * Datacasting * Internet Protocol Datacasting (IPDC) for DVB-H * UDcast * Interactive television Interactive television is a form of media convergence, addi ...

Multiprotocol Encapsulation
{{IPstack Multiprotocol Encapsulation, or MPE for short, is a Data link layer protocol defined by DVB which has been published as part of ETSI EN 301 192. It provides means to carry packet oriented protocols (like for instance IP) on top of MPEG transport stream (TS). Another encapsulation method is Unidirectional Lightweight Encapsulation (ULE) which was developed and standardized within the IETF as RFC 4326. Protocol Outline MPE uses MPEG-2 Private Table sections to carry the user datagrams. The section header is used to convey: * the frame's destination MAC address * optional ISO/IEC 8802-2 Logical Link Control (LLC) and ISO/IEC 8802-1 Sub-Network Attachment Point (SNAP) information * a payload scrambling indication * a MAC address scrambling indication MAC addresses from 1 to 6 bytes length may be used. The format of MPEG-2 DSM-CC sections happens to be compatible with DVB MPE. MPE-based IP Service Offerings Service Architecture A complete IP service offering over M ...

Generic Stream Encapsulation
Generic Stream Encapsulation, or GSE for short, is a Data link layer protocol defined by DVB. GSE provides means to carry packet oriented protocols such as IP on top of uni-directional physical layers such as DVB-S2, DVB-T2 and DVB-C2. GSE provides additional features beyond the pure carriage of IP datagrams that increase the protocol flexibility and applicability. Some key GSE functions/characteristics are: * Support for multi-protocol encapsulation (IPv4, IPv6, MPEG, ATM, Ethernet, 802.1pQ VLANs, etc.) * Transparency to network layer functions, including IP encryption and IP header compression. * Support of several addressing modes. In addition to the 6-byte MAC address (including multicast and unicast), it supports a MAC address-less mode, and an optional 3-byte address mode. * A mechanism for fragmenting IP datagrams or other network layer packets over Base Band frames to support ACM/ VCM. * Support for hardware filtering. * Extensibility: additional link protocols can ...
