DR Class 52.80
The ''Rekolokomotives'' of DR Class 52.80 first appeared in 1960 in service with the Deutsche Reichsbahn in East Germany as extensive rebuilds of the wartime locomotives or ''Kriegslokomotiven'' of the DRB Class 52 built by Nazi Germany. This modernisation, described as 'reconstruction' (''Rekonstruktion'', hence ''Rekolokomotive''), extended to almost all of the components and systems on the engine. Overview This reconstruction should not to be confused with the general repair of a number of locomotives which was also carried out in the Stendal Reichsbahn repair shop (''Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk'' or ''RAW'') from 1959 onwards. Under that programme only the refinements omitted during wartime were added back, and worn out components - or those which were too small (again for wartime austerity reasons) - were replaced. An Ausbesserungswerk (abbreviation AW or Aw) is a railway facility in German-speaking countries, the primary function of which is the repair (and formerly also the construction) of railway vehicles or their components. It is thus equivalent to a 'repair shop' or 'works'. It is also referred to as a Centralwerkstatt or Zentralwerkstatt (central workshop) or Hauptwerkstatt (main workshop). During the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) period between the two world wars these facilities were called Reichsbahnausbesserungswerke (RAW) (Reichsbahn repair shops). Trofimoff Valve
The Trofimoff valve (german: Trofimoff-Schieber) (also ''Trofimov'', ''Troffimoff'' or ''Trofimof'') is a springless pressure-compensation piston valve for steam locomotives. Overview The function of the valve is to improve efficiency when running light, with the regulator closed, such as when descending hills. The valve consists of the usual parts of a piston valve: two valve pistons with sealing rings, carried on a valve spindle driven by the valve gear. The difference with a Trofimoff valve is that the piston heads are free to slide on the spindle. When steam pressure is applied, under normal operating conditions, steam is admitted to the centre of the valve chest. This forces the valve heads apart against end stops on the spindle and into their normal working position. The valvegear works as usual. The European Train Control System (ETCS) is the signalling and control component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). It is a replacement for legacy train protection systems and designed to replace the many incompatible safety systems currently used by European railways. Integra-Signum is a Swiss train protection system introduced in 1933. Originally it was called Signum; the name Integra was added later. It transmits data inductively and is simple, robust and reliable also in snow. How it works The locomotives have three sending and receiving magnets and there are two trackside magnets near the signals. Integra-Signum asks the train driver to confirm distant signals that show stop and distant or home signals that show caution. If he does not confirm or passes a home signal that shows stop, the train is stopped automatically. This is achieved by interrupting the power supply to the motors and applying the emergency brake.
