Dyckias, with stiff and thorny leaves, prefer rocky and/or sunny areas and have a natural tendency to clump leading to thick, large mats. The subfamily Pitcairnioideae contains several "terrestrial" members of the Bromeliaceae, with cultivated genera including ''Dyckia'', ''Hechtia'', ''Pitcairnia'' and ''Puya''.
