Duchy
A duchy, also called a dukedom, is a Middle Ages, medieval country, territory, fiefdom, fief, or domain ruled by a duke or duchess, a ruler hierarchically second to the king or Queen regnant, queen in Western European tradition. There once existed an important difference between "sovereign dukes" and dukes who were ordinary noblemen throughout Europe. Some historic duchies were sovereign in areas that would become part of nation-states only during the modern era, such as happened in Germany (once a federal empire) and Italy (previously a unified kingdom). In contrast, others were subordinate districts of those Kingdom (politics), kingdoms that had unified either partially or completely during the medieval era, such as France, Spain, Sicily, Naples, and the Papal States. Examples In France, several duchies existed in the medieval period, including Duchy of Normandy, Normandy, Duchy of Burgundy, Burgundy, Brittany, and Aquitaine. Pass The Dutchie
"Pass the Dutchie" is a 1982 song performed by British-Jamaican band Musical Youth, taken from their debut studio album, ''The Youth of Today''. It was produced by Toney Owens from Kingston, Jamaica. The song was a major hit, hitting number one on the UK Singles Chart, and at least five other international charts. It peaked at 10 in the United States and sold over 5 million copies worldwide. Background The song was the band's first release on a major label. Following a shouted intro taken from U Roy's "Rule the Nation" with words slightly altered, the track combined two songs: "Gimme the Music" by U Brown, and "Pass the Kouchie" by Mighty Diamonds, which deals with the recreational use of cannabis ( kouchie being slang for a cannabis pipe). For the cover version, the song's title was bowdlerised to "Pass the Dutchie", the new word being a patois term for a Dutch oven, a type of cooking pot. All obvious drug references were removed from the lyrics; e.g., instead of the original ...

Dutchy (statue)
"''Dutchy''" is the nickname of a Confederate monument in Elberton, Georgia. Unveiled in 1898, the statue was criticized for its poor design, and in 1900 the statue was toppled and buried by townspeople. The statue was later unearthed in 1982 and currently is on display in a local museum. History Elberton, Georgia, is a city in north Georgia that is nicknamed the "Granite Capital of the World" due to its granite production. In the late 1890s, residents of the city, wanting to promote both their granite industry and the Lost Cause of the Confederacy, commissioned the creation of a Confederate monument. This was during a time when many other cities and towns in the Southern United States were erecting monuments and memorials to the Confederate States of America. Sculptor Arthur Beter was commissioned to create the monument. Little is known about Beter, except that he was an immigrant to the United States, possibly from either Germany or Italy. The granite for the statue was d ...

Dutch Masters (cigar)
Dutch Masters is an American brand of natural wrapped cigars that has been sold since 1912. Its distinctive packaging features Rembrandt's 1662 painting '' Syndics of the Drapers' Guild''. Dutch Masters cigars are currently manufactured and sold by Imperial Brands. They are machine-rolled cigars and come in two varieties: standard cigars and smaller cigarillos. G.H. Dutch Masters became well-known in the late 1950s and early 1960s for its sponsorship of comedian Ernie Kovacs. (Kovacs, a well known cigar smoker, never smoked Dutch Masters off camera, sticking almost exclusively to Havana cigars.) In 2015, Dutch Masters sponsored ...

Dutchie (doughnut)
The dutchie is a Canadian doughnut popularized by the Tim Hortons chain. It is a square, yeast-lifted doughnut containing raisins that is coated with a sugary glaze. The dutchie was one of two original baked goods (along with the apple fritter) that had been available on Tim Hortons' doughnut menu since the chain's inception in 1964. The dutchie was later removed from the chain's permanent menu, along with the peanut doughnut. In Canada In an informal 1988 poll of ''Toronto Star'' readers, Tim Hortons was awarded three gold medals, two for its dutchies and one to the banana cream doughnut. The company's double chocolate and honey glazed fared less well with the judges. In 1995, the ''Toronto Star'' had a story reflecting on Tim Hortons "selling out" to Wendy's with "the spectacle of another great Canadian icon, one more priceless chocolate coconut cream-filled dutchie glazed cruller Timbit of our precious heritage, gone to Yankee burgerfat, (rounding) out the menus of the tw ...
