Dutch Transport Workers' Association
The Dutch Association of Railway and Tramway Employees ( nl, Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Spoor- en Tramwegpersoneel, NV) was a trade union representing workers in the rail industry in the Netherlands. The union was founded in 1886, as the Dutch Association of Railway Officials, operating as a social club for railway workers in more prestigious positions. The Steeds Voornieuw was created as a union for all railway workers, but it operated illegally and was disbanded in 1898. Jan Oudegeest, a member of the executive of the Railway Officials, then took the initiative to transform it into a legal union for all railway workers, the NVSTP. It initially grew rapidly, but lost many of its members after an unsuccessful strike in 1903. In 1906, the union was a founding affiliate of the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions. Jan Oudegeest
Jan Oudegeest (5 August 1870 – 10 October 1950) was a Dutch trade unionist and politician. Born in Utrecht, Oudegeest worked on the railways and in 1898 founded the Dutch Association of Railway and Tramway Employees (NV), and became the first union's chair. In this role, he led a major strike in 1903, but afterward decided against strike action. When the Nederlands Verbond van Vakverenigingen was founded in 1906, Oudegeest became its first secretary, and in 1909 he took over as its president, serving until 1919. In this role, Oudegeest was highly critical of the Christian trade unions, believing them to be pro-capitalist. Oudegeest was a founding member of the International Labour Organization, as well as vice-chair of its administrative council for many years, where he made an unsuccessful attempt to bring the social democratic and Marxist internationals together. Dutch Confederation Of Trade Unions
The Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions ( nl, Nederlands Verbond van Vakverenigingen, NVV) was a Dutch social-democratic trade union. History The NVV was founded in 1906 as a merger of fifteen smaller unions, as a result of the inability of the previous unions to control the radical elements of the workers movement in the railworkers' strike of 1903. The NVV was led by Henri Polak, who was a prominent member of the socialist Social Democratic Workers' Party. During World War II the NVV was taken over by the German occupiers, its Dutch leader was Henk Woudenberg. Under the German occupation the NVV was transformed into a Nazi union. After the war these influences were purged and the NVV cooperated tightly with the centre left government to create a welfare state based on the principles of corporatism. The Central Union of Transport Workers ( nl, Centrale Bond van Transportarbeiders, CBT) was a trade union representing workers in the transport sector in the Netherlands. The union was founded on 1 January 1918, when the General Dutch Union of Port Authority Workers merged with the Union of Seamen. Like both its predecessors, it affiliated to the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions. In 1950, it was renamed as the Central Union of Transport Company Workers. By 1954, the union had 35,216 members. Hendricus Josephus Franciscus Marie (Henk) Sneevliet, known as Henk Sneevliet or by the ''pseudonym'' "Maring" (1883 - 1942), was a Dutch Communism, Communist, who was active in both the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies. As a functionary of the Communist International, Sneevliet guided the formation of both the Communist Party of Indonesia in 1914, and the Chinese Communist Party in 1921. In his native country, he was the founder, chairman and only House of Representatives (Netherlands), Representative for the Revolutionary Socialist Party (Netherlands), Revolutionary Socialist (Workers') Party, RSP/RSAP.
