Jean Dufy
Jean Dufy (March 12, 1888 – May 12, 1964) was a French painter of Parisian society, country scenes, circuses, horse races, theatrical productions, and orchestras. His work was exhibited in museums and galleries throughout his career. Early life and career Dufy was born on 12 March 1888 into a large, middle-class family in Le Havre. Two older brothers became musicians; a third older brother was the artist Raoul Dufy. Dufy left the Collège Saint-Joseph at the age of sixteen and was then placed as a clerk in a commercial enterprise. In 1906 he visited an exhibition put on by the Cercle de l’Art Moderne in Le Havre and was particularly inspired by a painting by Henri Matisse, ''Fenêtre ouverte à Collioure''. In 1907 he sold one of his first paintings to a founding member of the Cercle de l’Art Moderne. Between 1907 and 1909 he worked as a purser’s clerk on board the transatlantic liner ''La Savoie''. Raoul Dufy
Raoul Dufy (; 3 June 1877 – 23 March 1953) was a French Fauvism, Fauvist painter. He developed a colorful, decorative style that became fashionable for designs of ceramic art, ceramics and textile as well as decorative schemes for public buildings. He is noted for scenes of open-air social events.He was also a drawing, draftsman, printmaker, book illustrator, scenic designer, a designer of furniture and a planner of public spaces. Biography Early life Dufy was born into a large family at Le Havre, in Normandy. He had a younger brother, Jean Dufy, who also became an artist. Dufy left school at the age of fourteen to work in a coffee-importing company. In 1895, when he was 18, he started taking evening classes in art at Le Havre's École des Beaux-Arts (municipal art school). The classes were taught by Charles Lhuillier, who forty years earlier had been a student of the French portrait painter Ingres.
