Droop Nose (aeronautics)
The droop nose or drooped nose is a feature fitted to a small number of aircraft designs, the majority of these being also equipped with delta wings and capable of supersonic speeds. It is typically fitted upon an aircraft that possesses a sharp nose-up attitude during the takeoff and landing phases of flight, which would result in a conventional nose cone obscuring the flight crew's view of the runway and ground alike. On an aircraft fitted with a droop nose, the pilot is able to lower the nose cone, thereby improving visibility. Throughout the majority of a flight, the nose would be kept in the raised position for greater aerodynamic efficiency. An air speed record is the highest airspeed attained by an aircraft of a particular class. The rules for all official aviation records are defined by Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which also ratifies any claims. Speed records are divided into multiple classes with sub-divisions. There are three classes of aircraft: landplanes, seaplanes, and amphibians; then within these classes, there are records for aircraft in a number of weight categories. The North American Aviation XB-70 Valkyrie was the prototype version of the planned B-70 nuclear-armed, deep-penetration supersonic strategic bomber for the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command. In aeronautics, a canard is a wing configuration in which a small forewing or foreplane is placed forward of the main wing of a fixed-wing aircraft or a weapon.
