Dr. Mabuse The Gambler
''Dr. Mabuse the Gambler'' (german: Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler) is the first film in the Dr. Mabuse series about the character Doctor Mabuse who featured in the novels of Norbert Jacques. It was directed by Fritz Lang and released in 1922. The film is silent and would be followed by the sound sequels ''The Testament of Dr. Mabuse'' (1933) and ''The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse'' (1960). It is four and a half hours long and divided into two parts, originally released a month apart: ''Der große Spieler: Ein Bild der Zeit'' and ''Inferno: Ein Spiel von Menschen unserer Zeit''. The title, ''Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler'', makes use of three meanings of the German ''Der Spieler'' which can mean ''gambler'', ''puppeteer'', or ''actor''. The character Dr. Mabuse, who disguises himself, manipulates people, and is a notorious gambler, embodies all senses of the word. Theo Matejko
Theo Matejko (18 June 1893 – 9 September 1946) was an Austrian illustrator. He served in World War I and covered racing car events. In October 1928, with Ludwig Dettmann, he was invited on the first transatlantic flight of the airship ''Graf Zeppelin'', where he made an artistic record of the voyage. He was involved in the design work for the posters for the 1936 Olympics. He worked on ''Die Wehrmacht'' magazine during World War II; at the beginning of the war, he published a series of drawings depicting the horrors of indiscriminate bombing on civilians. In 1961 the Museum of Modern Art in New York City had an exhibition of his film posters. Anita Berber
Anita Berber (10 June 1899 – 10 November 1928) was a German dancer, actress, and writer who was the subject of an Otto Dix painting. She lived during the time of the Weimar Republic. Early life Born in Leipzig to Felix Berber, First Violinist with the Municipal Orchestra, and his wife, Anna Lucie Thiem, a cabaret singer and dancer, who later divorced when Berber was four. Berber was raised mainly by her grandmother in Dresden. In 1913 Berber studied dance at Émile Jaques-Dalcroze's school in Hellerau, which included trainings in rhythmic gymnastics, harmony, and music. The next year she had left to study ballet in Berlin with Rita Sacchetto. By the age of 16, she had made her debut as a cabaret dancer and in 1917 she was working as a fashion model for Die Dame. Max Adalbert (born Johannes Adolph Krampf; 19 February 1874 – 7 September 1933) was a German stage and film actor. Biography Adalbert was born in Danzig (Gdansk), Imperial Germany as ''Maximilian Adalbert Krampf'' to a Prussian Officer. He used his first names as his stage name from the start of his career and debuted at the age of 19 at the theater of Lübeck and in 1894 at the municipal theater of Barmen. Adalbert also appeared in St.Gallen, Nuremberg and Vienna. He moved to Berlin in 1899 to work at the ''Residenztheater''. Coming in contact with Curt Bois, Adalbert turned into a comedian and co-founded the popular ''Kabarett der Komiker'' in December 1924. Julius Falkenstein (25 February 1879 – 9 December 1933) was a German stage and film actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 180 films between 1914 and 1933. Falkenstein was Jewish, but secured a special permit to continue making films following the Nazi rise to power in 1933. He died of natural causes the same year, having made only one further film. Grete Berger
Grete Berger (born Margarethe Berg; 11 February 1883 – 23 May 1944) was an Austrian-German stage and film actress whose career came to an end following the rise of the Nazi Party in 1933. Berger was murdered at Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944 shortly after her arrival. Career Grete Berger was born Margarethe Berg into a Jewish family in Austrian Silesia. Charles Puffy (born Károly Hochstadt; 3 November 1884 – 1942 or 1943) was a Hungarian film actor. Biography Hochstadt appeared in more than 130 films between 1914 and 1938. He was the only slapstick star in Hungary's silent film era, appearing under the name "Pufi" (meaning "Fatty" in Hungarian, referring to his weight) and Carlie Puffy in the United States for Universal Studios. His other stage names were Károly Huszár or Pufi Huszár. Besides his work on films, he frequently appeared on stage, mostly in comical roles. Georg John (born Georg Jacobsohn; 23 July 1879 – 18 November 1941) was a German stage and film actor. Early life Georg Jacobsohn was born into a Jewish household in Schmiegel, Province of Posen, Imperial Germany. Career John began his career around 1900 in smaller stages and traveling theatres. Hans Adalbert Schlettow (11 June 1888 – 30 April 1945) was a German film actor. Schlettow appeared in around a hundred and sixty films during his career, the majority during the silent era. Among his best-known film roles was ''Hagen von Tronje'' in Fritz Lang's film classic ''Die Nibelungen'' (1924).
