Down Junior Football Championship
The Down Junior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by lower-tier Down GAA clubs. The Down County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1920. The national media covers the competition. Teconnaught are the title holders (2022) defeating Dromara in the Final. History In the 2016 final Drumgath held Teconnaught in what was a surprising result. Drumgath then had a landslide win in the replay to secure their first ever JFC crown. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the ? Down Recorder
The ''Down Recorder'' is a weekly newspaper published in Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland every Wednesday. It is owned by W.Y. Crichton & Co. History The paper, then known as ''The Downpatrick Recorder'', was first published on 31 December 1836. It was the first newspaper to be published in the town, and was owned by Conway Pilson, the son of a local historian. At that time, news from London and abroad came by boat to Belfast in the evening. However, the boat rested for 12 hours at Newry, from Downpatrick. Pilson organised a horse relay to bring the news from there so he could publish it before any rival papers. The paper was renamed ''The Down Recorder'' in 1878 to reflect its wider circulation. In 1964, the production moved from the original offices in Irish Street to a former Post Office building on Church Street. Warrenpoint GAA
St Peter's GAA ( ga, Cumann Pheadair Naofa) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Warrenpoint, County Down, Northern Ireland. Foundation The GAA in Warrenpoint pre-dates St Peter's by a considerable span of years for it was in 1888 that the original seed was sown with the name of John Martin. The club colours were black and amber strips. Being adopted on a proposal by John Carr and seconded by Thomas Caulifield the Club maintained the name until the mid-1920s until it fell on hard times. In 1931, it revived but because Glenn had registered a new club, John Martin some months before, the name of St Peter's was chosen and blue and white were chosen as the club colours. It is worth noting that the John Martin's of 1888 won the first competition held in Down by beating Mayobridge at Edenmore. Mayobridge GAA
Mayobridge Gaelic Athletic Association, also called Mayobridge Gaelic Athletic Club or Saint Patrick's Gaelic Athletic Social Club, is a Gaelic football and ladies' Gaelic football club based in Mayobridge, County Down, Northern Ireland. History The club was founded in 1888 as ''Saint Patrick's Mayobridge'' and is the oldest in County Down. The minutes of the Central Council of the GAA record that on 30 April 1888, an application for affiliation was received from St Patrick's Mayobridge County Down. The acceptance of that application makes the club the oldest registered GAA club in the county. Mayobridge won the county title in 1918 and 1919. The youth club and later club grounds were opened in 1978. Mayobridge enjoyed a golden age around the turn of the millennium, winning eight senior county titles in ten years (1999 to 2008) and reaching the final of the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship twice, in 2001 and 2004. John Mitchel GFC
John Mitchel GFC is a Gaelic Athletic Association club, established in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland, in 1956, and is called after the Irish Patriot John Mitchel. The club had the audacious ambition of winning the Down Senior Football Championship in five years and actually succeeded in four years, winning its first in 1960 and repeating the feat three more times in that decade in 1964, 1967 and 1968. Newry Mitchels forward Seán O'Neill also won 3 All-Ireland Senior Football Championships with Down and was picked on the Gaelic Athletic Association's teams of the Century and Millennium. Mitchels home pitch is Gerry Brown Park, Greenbank. The grounds are named after Gerry Brown, founding member. Gerry managed the Down Senior football team to All-Ireland success in 1968. Liatroim Fontenoys is a Gaelic Athletic Association Club in County Down, Northern Ireland. The club promotes hurling, Gaelic football, and camogie. History Liatroim Fontenoys, a small rural club in County Down, founded in the village with the same name ( Leitrim), was founded in February 1888 by and is the first GAA club established in that county. The McAleenan brothers from nearby Ballymaginaghy were working in Dublin during 1887. While there, they met Maurice Davin and Michael Cusack, early pioneers of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). Around this time J.L. Savage, a native of nearby Backaderry, learned about Gaelic games. In 1888, Savage and the McAleenans founded Liatroim Fontenoys GAC, named for the Battle of Fontenoy (1745) in which an Irish Brigade helped the French to a victory over the British (part of the War of the Austrian Succession). Russell Gaelic Union, Downpatrick is a Gaelic football and ladies' Gaelic football club based in Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland. History The first Gaelic Athletic Association club in Downpatrick was founded in 1896, ''Clan Na Gael'', mostly a hurling team. Gaelic football began to be popular in the 1910s. The games were outlawed during the Irish War of Independence (1918–22), but teams were refounded in 1924 and the ''St Patrick'' club affiliated in 1926. Downpatrick won their first Down Senior Football Championship in 1935. In 1938–39 they moved to Leatham's field at Ballymote and renamed themselves ''The Thomas Russell Club'', after Thomas Russell (1767–1803), executed at Downpatrick for his role in the Irish rebellion of 1803.
