Douro Province
Douro is a former province of Portugal, established in 1832. The province encompassed parts of the earlier provinces of Beira and Entre-Douro-e-Minho. In 1835, the province was dissolved as an administrative division and became a grouping of states for statistical purposes and regional reference, covering the districts of Porto, Aveiro and Coimbra. When the provinces were restored as administrative divisions in 1936, the old province of Douro was not re-established. Province
A province is almost always an administrative division within a country or sovereign state, state. The term derives from the ancient Roman ''Roman province, provincia'', which was the major territorial and administrative unit of the Roman Empire, Roman Empire's territorial possessions outside Roman Italy, Italy. The term ''province'' has since been adopted by many countries. In some countries with no actual provinces, "the provinces" is a metaphorical term meaning "outside the capital city". While some provinces were produced artificially by Colonialism, colonial powers, others were formed around local groups with their own ethnic identities. Beira (Portugal)
Beira () was one of the six traditional provinces or ''comarcas'' of Portugal. The territorial extension is different from that of the area called ''the Beiras'', which refers to three provinces of 1936, Beira Alta, Beira Baixa and Beira Litoral. Geography The most important cities within the borders of the traditional province are: Coimbra, Aveiro, Leiria, Viseu, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Figueira da Foz, Covilhã and Pinhel. The main river is the Mondego; other rivers include the Vouga, Dão, Côa, Zêzere and Paiva. Entre-Douro-e-Minho Province
Entre Douro e Minho () is one of the historical provinces of Portugal which encompassed the country's northern Atlantic seaboard between the Douro and Minho rivers. Contemporaries often referred to the province as simply "Minho". It was one of six provinces Portugal was commonly divided into from the early modern period until 1936, although these provinces were not recognized as official units of government. Geography The coastline of Entre Minho e Douro is level and unbroken except by the estuaries of the main rivers; inland, the elevation gradually increases towards the north and east, where several mountain ranges mark the frontier. Beira Litoral is a former province (''província'') of Portugal, formally instituted in an administrative reform of 1936. It was abolished with the 1976 Constitution of Portugal. The province was bordered on the north by Douro Litoral Province, on the east by Beira Alta Province and Beira Baixa Province, on the southeast by Ribatejo Province, on the southwest by Estremadura Province and on the West by the Atlantic Ocean. Beira Litoral was made up of 33 municipalities (''concelhos''), integrated for the most part into Aveiro District and Coimbra District, half of Leiria District, and one municipality of Santarém District.
