Douglas Water
The Douglas Water ( gd, Dùghlas) is a river in South Lanarkshire of south-central Scotland. It is a tributary of the River Clyde. Etymology The river's name comes from the Gaelic ''dubh-ghlas'' or Brittonic ''dūβ-*glẹiss'', both meaning either "black water" or "black stream". Course The course of the Douglas Water is entirely within the South Lanarkshire council area. The river rises in the hills which separate Lanarkshire from Ayrshire, to the south west of Muirkirk. The source is close to that of the River Ayr, which flows west to the sea, but the Douglas Water runs north-east then east, past Glespin and into Douglasdale. Here the river flows through the village of Douglas, and past the scant remains of Douglas Castle. The castle was a stronghold of the House of Douglas, a powerful medieval family who took their surname from the river. The A70 road follows the river through Douglasdale, and on to the Clyde. Douglas Water, Loch Fyne
The Douglas Water () is a river in Argyll and Bute, in west of Scotland. It emerges from the northeastern end of the diminutive Loch Dubh-ghlas and flows northeastwards through Coire Dubh-ghlas, before turning east then southeast amongst extensive conifer plantations to the bridge which carries the A83 road over it. Glen Douglas
Glen Douglas ( gd, Gleann Dùghlais) is a glen in the southwest Scottish Highlands. It is drained by the Douglas Water, which discharges at the village of Inverbeg at its eastern end into Loch Lomond. The glen is followed by a single-track road which links the A82 road alongside Loch Lomond with the A814 road beside Loch Long. Inveruglas
Inveruglas ( gd, Inbhir Dhubhghlais) is a hamlet on the west shore of Loch Lomond, fairly near the north end of the loch and is within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. It is situated on the A82 trunk road, connecting Glasgow to Inverness. It is within the historic county of Dunbartonshire, and since 1996 it has been part of the Argyll and Bute council area. Nearby isles include Inveruglas Isle and Wallace's Isle. Inversnaid is roughly opposite on the east shore, there is a pedestrian ferry. The Inveruglas Water flows into the loch at the hamlet, flowing down from Loch Sloy. The name of this watercourse is a curious back-formation, since Inveruglas means "the mouth of the Douglas". It may have acquired this name to differentiate it from the Douglas Water a few miles further south. Inveruglas Isle lies in Inveruglas Bay, an inlet of Loch Lomond. Douglas Water (hamlet)
Douglas Water is a hamlet in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Named after the Douglas Water, the river which flows through the hamlet, local mining operations provided employment to local people, and the hamlet was bolstered by the ''Coltness Iron and Coal Company'' establishing an operation nearby. Three haulage companies that operated from the hamlet also provided a source of employment. There was for many years a junior football team that played in the hamlet, known as Douglas Water Thistle, but they became defunct some time ago. Several of their players have gone on to enjoy careers as professional footballers. There was also a train station servicing Douglas Water, but it stopped being a working station around the time of the Beeching cuts. The station platform still exists. When the last coal mine in the hamlet closed in 1967 the hamlet lost much of its population, as people left for other areas in search of employment. Douglas William Walter, DMA is Professor of Percussion at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music, and was the first marimba and vibraphone artist to win a First Prize in the Concert Artists Guild Competition in NYC. He has performed over 350 solo recitals and concerts in forty states, Canada, Brazil and nine countries in Europe, in addition to international conventions of the Percussive Arts Society, International Association for Jazz Education and The National Association for Music Education.
