Douglas Smith (Maine Politician)
Douglas Myles Smith (born December 11, 1946) is an American politician from Maine. Smith, a Republican, served in Maine House of Representatives from 1971 to 1977 and the Maine Senate from 2006 to 2010 from District 27, which included his residence of Dover-Foxcroft in Piscataquis County. He chose not to seek re-election in 2010 and was replaced by Republican Douglas Thomas. In 2010, Smith was rumored to have sought the position of Maine Attorney General which eventually went to William Schneider. Smith earned his B.A. at the University of Maine and his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law. He has practiced law in Dover-Foxcroft for over 31 years. Paul T. Davis (born March 25, 1947) is an American politician from Maine. He has served in both the state Senate and state House of Representatives, and is a member of the Maine Republican Party. Prior to entering politics, Davis served for 23 years as a state trooper. He was then elected to the Maine Senate, where he served as Assistant Minority Leader and Minority Leader. The Maine House of Representatives is the lower house of the Maine Legislature. The House consists of 151 voting members and three nonvoting members. The voting members represent an equal number of districts across the state and are elected via plurality voting. The nonvoting members represent three of Maine's Native American tribes, though two tribes have declined to send representatives. Each voting member of the House represents around 9,000 citizens of the state. Because it is a part-time position, members of the Maine House of Representatives usually have outside employment as well. Millinocket is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 4,114 at the 2020 census. Millinocket's economy has historically been centered on forest products and recreation, but the paper company closed in 2008. History Millinocket was first settled in 1829 by Betsy and Thomas Fowler and their family, who cleared land for a farm. When the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad extended service to Houlton in 1894, the line ran through the area, opening it to development. Charles W. Mullen, an engineering graduate from the University of Maine, proposed a hydroelectric dam on the Penobscot River. Dover-Foxcroft is the largest town in and the seat of Piscataquis County, Maine, United States. The population was 4,422 at the 2020 census. The town is located near the geographic center of the state. History Dover-Foxcroft was originally two towns, Dover and Foxcroft, separated by the Piscataquis River. Dover was to the south of the river, and Foxcroft was to the north. Dover was purchased from Massachusetts by Boston merchants Charles Vaughan and John Merrick, both of whom had emigrated from England. It was first permanently settled in 1803 by Eli Towne from Temple, New Hampshire, then incorporated on January 19, 1822.
