Douglas Rae (TV Executive)
Douglas Rae (born 22 June 1947, Edinburgh) is a Scottish television producer and executive, and a former children's television presenter. Rae presented the long-running Thames Television children's series '' Magpie'', taking over from Pete Brady in 1971 and remaining until 1977. He then moved behind the camera, becoming an executive producer on series including the BBC serial '' Monarch of the Glen'' and Bloomsbury Group drama ''Life in Squares ''Life in Squares'' is a British television mini-series that was broadcast on BBC Two from 27 July to 10 August 2015. A television producer is a person who oversees one or more aspects of video production on a television show, television program. Some producers take more of an executive role, in that they conceive new programs and pitch them to the television networks, but upon acceptance they focus on business matters, such as budgets and contracts. Thames Television, commonly simplified to just Thames, was a Broadcast license, franchise holder for a region of the British ITV (TV network), ITV television network serving Greater London, London and surrounding areas from 30 July 1968 until the night of 31 December 1992. Thames Television broadcast from 9:25 Monday morning to 5:15 Friday afternoon (7:00 Friday night until 1982) at which time it would hand over to London Weekend Television (LWT). Magpie (TV Series)
''Magpie'' was a British children's television programme shown on ITV from 30 July 1968 to 6 June 1980. It was a magazine format show, intended to compete with the BBC's '' Blue Peter'', but it attempted to be more "hip", focusing more on popular culture. The show's creators, Lewis Rudd and Sue Turner, named the programme ''Magpie'', as a reference to the magpie's habit of collecting small items and also because of "mag" being evocative of "magazine" and "pie" being evocative of a collection of ingredients. Broadcast history The programme, made by Thames Television, was first transmitted on 30 July 1968, Thames Television's first day of broadcasting. It was shown weekly until 1969, after which, until it ended on 6 June 1980, it went out twice a week. It was not fully networked to all other ITV companies until the autumn of 1969. Pete Brady (born 1941) is a Canadian radio presenter, television presenter and company director who has worked in the United Kingdom for over 50 years. He was one of the original lineup of disc jockeys on the pirate radio station Radio London as well as BBC Radio 1 and was one of the original presenters of ''Magpie''. He retired early from broadcasting to set up Clearwater Communications, a group of companies specialising in the production of major corporate events around the world. He was diagnosed with tongue and kidney cancer in 2015 and is now concentrating on helping others who have been diagnosed and treated for Head and Neck cancers. Brady was born in Montreal and was heavily involved in radio during his teen years. He first joined Radio Jamaica as a stand-in presenter. ''Monarch of the Glen'' is a British drama television series produced by Ecosse Films for BBC Scotland and broadcast on BBC One for seven series between February 2000 and October 2005 with 64 episodes in total.
