Dooley Ministry (1921–1922)
The Dooley ministry (1921–1922) or the Second Dooley ministry was the 40th ministry of the New South Wales Government, and was led by the 21st Premier, James Dooley. Dooley was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1907, serving until 1927, when he fell out with the Labor leadership, lost Labor preselection, and stood unsuccessfully as an Independent Labor candidate for the Senate in the 1931 federal election. Dooley served as Deputy Labor leader to Ernest Durack and then John Storey, when Labor came to power at the 1920 state election, with what Storey called "half a mandate". The assembly was evenly divided, with Labor having 43 seats and the support of Percy Brookfield () and Arthur Gardiner (Independent Labor), while the Nationalists had 28 seats and the support of 15 seats of Progressive Party and 2 independent Nationalists. Progressive Party (1920)
The Progressive Party of New South Wales was a New South Wales political party that operated between 1920 and 1927, achieving representation in the Legislative Assembly due to proportional representation. It was not a direct successor to the earlier Progressive Party that had operated in the state between 1901 and 1907 but did include members of the former party including George Briner and Walter Bennett. The party attracted support from conservative voters in both rural and urban NSW. As a result, its policies were socially conservative but had elements of agrarian socialism. Minister For Forests (New South Wales)
The Minister for Forests was a ministry in New South Wales responsible for the management of forests for the purpose of the timber industry and was established in 1916 and abolished in 2019. While it was a separate portfolio for much of this period, it was generally held in conjunction with another portfolio, typically Lands or Agriculture. The Nationalist Party, also known as the National Party, was an Australian political party. It was formed on 17 February 1917 from a merger between the Commonwealth Liberal Party and the National Labor Party, the latter formed by Prime Minister Billy Hughes and his supporters after the 1916 Labor Party split over World War I conscription. Edward Kavanagh (Australian Politician)
Edward John Kavanagh (30 October 1871 – 10 October 1956) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to publican William Kavanagh and Ellen Carty. He attended Marist Brothers' College before going to sea on a coastal trading vessel. He later worked as a tailor, and became involved in the Pressers' Union and through that with the Trades and Labor Council. On 31 December 1894 he married Agnes Jane Cousins, with whom he had six children. He was president of the Trades and Labor Council from 1905 to 1906. In 1912 he was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council as a Labor member. He was active in the anti-conscription campaign in 1916 and was arrested during the 1917 general strike. John Joseph Gregory McGirr (11 October 1879 – 23 March 1949) was an Australian politician who served in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1913 to 1925, representing the Australian Labor Party, Labor Party.
