Donley County Courthouse And Jail
The Donley County Courthouse and Jail, on Public Sq. in Clarendon, Texas, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It is also a Texas State Antiquities Landmark and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The courthouse was designed by architects Bulger & Rapp and was built during 1890–91. The Pauley Jail Building Co. provided plans and materials for the jail. With six photos from 1977. Clarendon, Texas
Clarendon is a city in Donley County, Texas, United States. Its population was 2,026 at the 2010 census. The county seat of Donley County, Clarendon is located on U.S. Highway 287 in the Texas Panhandle, east of Amarillo. History Clarendon, established in 1878, was one of the three original Panhandle settlements, the other two being Mobeetie and Tascosa. Clarendon was relocated after its original location was bypassed by the Fort Worth and Denver Railway. The town founder was a Methodist clergyman, L.H. Carhart, who envisioned a "sobriety settlement" in contrast to typical boomtowns of that era. Clarendon acquired the sobriquet "Saints Roost" from local cowboys, hence the unusual name of the Clarendon museum, the Saints' Roost Museum. The town was hit by two tornadoes simultaneously on March 13, 2021. The first tornado caused minor damage west of town before strengthening and causing EF2 damage on the north side of town. Bulger & Rapp
Charles William Bulger (August 3, 1851 – June 17, 1922) was an architect in the United States, born in Delphi, Indiana. He worked with Isaac Rapp in Trinidad, Colorado, at Bulger and Rapp for several years, designing many of the city's early buildings. The firm dissolved in 1892. In downtown Galveston, he designed the E.S. Levy Building in 1896. He designed the Heffron Building (1906), now used as the U.S. Appraiser’s Stores, in the Strand-Mechanic Landmark Historic District. In the East End Landmark Historic District he designed 1318 Sealy (1896), 1514 Ball (1897), the Victorian Inn (1900) at 503 17th street, and 1502 Broadway (1906); and in the Silk Stocking Historic District he designed homes on the 1300 and 1400 blocks of 24th Street and Rosenberg. He was also charged with redesigning the Tremont Opera House into Levy Department Store. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. Changes that are unsympathetic may result in removal of the designation and historical marker. More than 3,600 RTHL structures are spread throughout the state.
