Don Williams (offensive Lineman)
Don Donaho Williams (May 23, 1919 – August 11, 2001) was an American football guard who played for one season in the National Football League (NFL). After playing college football for Texas, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 10th round of the 1941 NFL Draft. His rights were transferred to the Pittsburgh Steelers due to the events later referred to as the Pennsylvania Polka, and he played for them in 1941. 1942 Second Air Force Bombers Football Team
The 1942 Second Air Force Bombers football team represented the Second Air Force during the 1942 college football season. The team, based at Fort George Wright in Spokane, Washington, compiled an 11–0–1 record and defeated the Hardin–Simmons Cowboys in the 1943 Sun Bowl. Despite its undefeated record, the Second Air Force team and all other service teams were omitted from the football rankings. Washington State, ranked No. 16 in the final AP Poll, played the Second Air Force team to a 6–6 tie. Red Reese, who coached football and basketball at Eastern Washington College before the war, was the team's head coach. The Pennsylvania Polka refers to a series of moves affecting the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers franchises in the National Football League (NFL) from 1940 to 1941. Art Rooney, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, sold his team to Alexis Thompson on December 10, 1940, and subsequently bought a 50% stake in the Philadelphia Eagles franchise from owner Bert Bell. At the time of the deals, a mini-draft took place between the two teams, using a pool of players from both rosters. This resulted in the Eagles acquiring seven players formerly of the Steelers, and the Steelers obtaining eleven players formerly of the Eagles. The 1941 NFL Draft was also held during this time. Rooney later had second thoughts on the transactions, and made an agreement to swap cities with new Steelers owner Thompson on April 3, 1941. In gridiron football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is a player who lines up between the center (American football), center and the offensive tackle, tackles on the offensive line of a football team on the line of scrimmage used primarily for Blocking (American football), blocking. Right guards (RG) is the term for the guards on the right of the offensive line, while left guards (LG) are on the left side. Guards are to the right or left of the center. The guard's job is to protect the quarterback from the incoming defensive line, linemen during pass plays, as well as creating openings (holes) for the running backs to head through.
