"Don't Mention the World Cup", also titled "Don't Mention the War", is a 2006 song written by Dean Whitbread and Ashley Slater and performed by The First Eleven with John Cleese. Released to coincide with the 2006 FIFA World Cup, it was intended to dissuade supporters of the England national football team from referring to the Second World War while in Germany for the tournament. History The song references Cleese's ''Fawlty Towers'' character Basil Fawlty's line in "The Germans" episode: "Don't mention the war. I did but I think I got away with it". Cleese released this song as a way to try and change English feelings towards Germans and to move people away from associating Germans with the Second World War. Stan Boardman
Stanley Boardman (born 7 December 1937) is an English comedian. Early life and career Boardman was evacuated with his family to Wrexham during the Second World War, and after the family returned to their Merseyside home mistakenly thinking the area had escaped the German bombs, his elder brother Tommy was killed in a bombing raid. He had been a keen footballer in his youth and was an apprentice at Liverpool F.C. He signed for Tranmere Rovers as a teenager. Boardman ran a haulage firm before winning a holiday camp talent contest and breaking into television on '' Opportunity Knocks'' and '' The Comedians''. Boardman became known for his anti-German jokes, with his claim that "the Germans bombed our chippy" during the Second World War. Weston-super-Mare, also known simply as Weston, is a seaside town in North Somerset, England. It lies by the Bristol Channel south-west of Bristol between Worlebury Hill and Bleadon Hill. "Stan's World Cup Song", also known as "Aye Aye Ippy The Germans Bombed Our Chippy", is a song by English comedian Stan Boardman. It is set to the tune of "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain" and the Dambusters March. It was released to coincide with the 2006 FIFA World Cup. History Boardman came up with the idea of writing his own World Cup song because he thought that some of them were "lousy". He then wrote the song and designed a CD cover for it and contacted a friend of his to help record it. The song was first performed in Liverpool on 28 April 2006. Boardman stated that if the song made it to no. 1 in the UK charts, he would donate half of the profits to charity. The song's line "The Germans bombed our chippy" was based on a real incident when Boardman's local fish and chip shop was destroyed by a bomb dropped by the Luftwaffe in the Liverpool Blitz. Ashley Slater (born 1961) is a British trombone player and best known for his narration on the television series Boo! as well as his work with Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim) in the band Freak Power. Career In 1983 after leaving the army, Slater attended the National Centre for Orchestral Studies, after which he joined the jazz orchestral collective Loose Tubes.
