Don't Cry Baby
"Don't Cry Baby" is a song composed by James P. Johnson, with lyrics by Saul Bernie, and Stella Unger. The song was first recorded on October 11, 1929 by Bessie Smith, who was accompanied on piano by Johnson. The song was revived in 1943 by jazz bandleader Erskine Hawkins, who greatly simplified Johnson's original composition by removing both the introductory (sectional) verse and the "B" section of the chorus. This simplified arrangement formed the basis of most later recordings on the song. Throughout the late 1940s and 1950s, the song was recorded fairly regularly (by artists working in genres including western swing, traditional pop, and rhythm & blues), but was not a hit again until Etta James recorded it in 1961. Between 1962 and 1964, versions were released by James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Ray Charles. Since the mid-1960s, the song has been occasionally revived. Cover versions *In 1943, Erskine Hawkins recorded a version of the song with vocals by Jimmy Mitchell. Thi ...

List Of Billboard Number-one R&B Singles Of The 1940s
Linked here are ''Billboard'' magazine's number-one rhythm and blues hits. The ''Billboard'' R&B chart is today known as the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. History From May 22, 1948 to October 13, 1958, multiple charts were published, which explains the overlap in the dates of the charts. The 1942 "Harlem Hit Parade" chart, based on juke box plays, became the "Race Records Juke Box" chart in 1945, and the "Race Record Best Sellers" chart, based on sales, began in parallel in 1948. They were renamed as R&B charts in 1949. A third, "Jockeys" chart, based on radio airplay, was introduced in 1955, and a unified chart was only introduced in 1958. Because of the existence of multiple charts, some dates had more than one number-one song during the week. Gap in the chart From November 30, 1963 to January 23, 1965 there was no ''Billboard'' R&B singles chart. Some publications have used ''Cashbox'' magazine's stats in their place. No specific reason has ever been given as to why ''Bill ...
