Djoewariah
Ng. Ratu Djoewariah (also known as Djoeariah; Enhanced Spelling: Juwariah) was an Indonesian actress active in the 1940s and 1950s. Biography Djoewariah originated from Lampung. She entered cinema in 1940, when she was signed by Union Films in Batavia, Dutch East Indies (now Jakarta, Indonesia), for ''Bajar dengan Djiwa''. In her film debut, she played the role of Djuliah, a young woman who is sold to a loan shark by her father. This was followed by another two films, both produced in 1941. In ''Wanita dan Satria'' she appeared alongside Ratna Djoewita and Hidajat in the story of a playboy who ultimately receives his comeuppance, whereas in ''Asmara Moerni'', Djoewariah as a maid who becomes the target of the affections of a young doctor (played by Adnan Kapau Gani). ''Asmara Moerni'' (; Perfected Spelling: ''Asmara Murni''; Indonesian for ''True Love'') is a 1941 romance film from the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) directed by Rd Ariffien and produced by Ang Hock Liem for Union Films. Written by Saeroen, the film followed a doctor who falls in love with his maid, as well as her failed romance with a fellow villager. Starring Adnan Kapau Gani, Djoewariah, and S. Joesoef, the black-and-white film was cast and advertised to cater to the growing native intelligentsia. Despite mixed reviews, it was a commercial success. Bajar Dengan Djiwa
''Bajar dengan Djiwa'' (; Perfected Spelling: ''Bayar dengan Jiwa''; Indonesian for "Pay with ne'sSoul") is a believed lost 1941 film from the Dutch East Indies (modern day Indonesia). Directed by R Hu and produced by Ang Hock Liem, it starred A Bakar, Djoewariah, O Parma, Oedjang, RS Fatimah, Soelastri, and Zonder. The story centers on two families torn apart by finances and clashes of personality. The third film produced by Union Films, ''Bajar dengan Djiwa'' featured many actors who had previously appeared in the company's works. It was released by February 1941. Advertisements emphasised the realism of the story, and reviewers praised the film's acting, romance, and humour. ''Wanita dan Satria'' (; Indonesian for ''The Woman and the Hero'') is a 1941 film from the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) directed by Rd Ariffien and produced by Ang Hock Liem for Union Films that is probably lost. Starring Djoewariah, Ratna Djoewita, Hidajat, Z. Algadrie, and Moesa, it follows a womaniser named Soedrajat who abuses his status to gain women's trust before ultimately getting his comeuppance. Reviews were mostly positive, with one praising the film's depiction of women's issues in a Muslim society. Plot Soedrajat abuses his high social status in order to womanise and becomes his rich uncle's heir despite the latter having a son, the kindly and noble Soelarsa. Union Films
Union Films was a film production company located in Batavia, Dutch East Indies (now Jakarta, Indonesia). Established by ethnic Chinese businessmen Ang Hock Liem and Tjoa Ma Tjoen in 1940, it produced seven black-and-white films before it was dissolved in 1942; all are thought to be lost. The company's films were directed by four men, mostly ethnic Chinese, and launched the careers of actors such as Rendra Karno and Djoewariah. Established during the revival of the Indies film industry, Union released its first film, ''Kedok Ketawa'', in July 1940. This was followed by a series of films penned by Saeroen which were increasingly oriented towards the Indies' growing intelligentsia and attempted to distance themselves from the theatrical conventions which were common in the contemporary film industry.
