Diário de Notícias, locally known as Diário de Notícias da Madeira, is a centenary Madeiran newspaper headquartered in Funchal. In January 2020 its daily circulation was on average 9023, making it the biggest Portuguese regional newspaper in circulation. In 2016 it counted 5600 subscribers and its Sunday magazine is D7. History It was founded on October 12, 1876 by Canon Alfredo César de Oliveira, a man of remarkable culture, energetic parliamentary, and ardent polemicist. Considering his intellectual training as a combat journalist, the canon gave a predominantly news feature from the first hour, covering the largest number of regional facts, in order to captivate and interest all social strata, while still agitating and defending real Madeiran problems. The Socialist Party ( pt, Partido Socialista, , PS) is a social-democratic political party in Portugal. It was founded on 19 April 1973 in the German city of Bad Münstereifel by militants from the Portuguese Socialist Action ( pt, Acção Socialista Portuguesa). The Government of the Autonomous Region of Madeira is the local government of this Portuguese autonomous region. Alberto João Cardoso Gonçalves Jardim, Order of Christ (Portugal), GCC, Order of Infante D. Henrique, GCIH (, born 4 February 1943) is a Portuguese politician who was the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Portugal, from 1978 to 2015. He is a controversial political figure in Portugal. Early years Jardim was born on Madeira Island in 1943, son of Alberto Gonçalves Jardim (d. 1954) and wife Marceliana do Patrocínio de Jesus Cardoso (Funchal, São Pedro, baptized 2 September 1909 – 29 July 2006). He went to Coimbra in order to study at the local university, and he lived there for over a decade as a student. The Social Democratic Party ( pt, Partido Social Democrata, ; PSD) is a liberal-conservative political party in Portugal. Commonly known by its colloquial initials PSD, on ballot papers its initials appear as its official form PPD/PSD, with the first three letters coming from the party's original name, the Democratic People's Party (, PPD). History and profile ''Diário de Notícias'' was first published in Lisbon on 29 December 1864 by Tomás Quintino Antunes and Eduardo Coelho. At its early phase the paper had no explicit political stance and financially relied on the advertisements. Its headquarters is in Lisbon.
