Sylvie Bernier
Sylvie Bernier, CM, CQ (born January 31, 1964) is an Olympic athlete from Sainte-Foy, Quebec, Canada. She won the gold medal in the Women's 3m Springboard Diving at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Bernier announced her retirement from competitive diving in December 1984 and accepted a position as an advisor for the federal Department of Fitness and Amateur Sport. Immediately following her retirement, she began volunteering as a technical advisor with the association's youth development program in January 1985. In June 1985, she was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec and a Member of the Order of Canada, Canada's highest civilian honour. Diving At The Summer Olympics
Diving was first introduced in the official programme of the Summer Olympic Games at the 1904 Games of St. Louis and has been an Olympic sport since. It was known as "fancy diving" for the acrobatic stunts performed by divers during the dive (such as somersaults and twists). This discipline of Aquatics, along with swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo, is regulated and supervised by the International Swimming Federation (FINA), the international federation (IF) for aquatic sports. Wendy Wyland
Janna Wendy Wyland (November 25, 1964 – September 27, 2003) was a female diver from the United States. More commonly known as Wendy Wyland, she represented her native country at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, winning the bronze medal in the Women's 10m Platform competition. Two years earlier, she won the world title in the same event. Biography Wyland was born in Jackson, Michigan to parents Vernon and Beth Wyland. Her family moved to Penfield, New York, where she was coached in diving by Betty Perkins-Carpenter from the age of six. When she was 14, she moved to Mission Viejo, California to train under Hall of Fame coach Ron O’Brien. She competed as a member of the Mission Viejo Nadadores Diving Team. While attending Florida Atlantic University at Boca Raton, Florida, Wyland trained for the 1988 Olympics at Mission Bay under O'Brien and alongside fellow athletes Greg Louganis, Michele Mitchell and Kent Ferguson. Michele Anne Mitchell (born January 10, 1962, in Phoenix, Arizona) is a former diver from the United States. She is a two-time Olympic medalist on the 10-meter platform, winning silver in 1984 and 1988. Zhou Jihong (, born 11 January 1965) is a Chinese diver who won the first gold medal for Chinese diving. Sports career Born in Wuhan on 1965, Zhou originally practiced gymnastics before switching to diving. In 1977, she entered the Hubei diving team and began to receive professional diving training. She won the national championship in 1981 and entered the Chinese women's diving team in 1982. Christina Seufert Sholtis (born Christina Anne Seufert; January 13, 1957, in Sacramento, California) and raised in Ambler Pennsylvania is an Olympic diver from the USA. Seafert qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team but did not compete due to the U.S. Olympic Committee's boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia. She was one of 461 athletes to receive a Congressional Gold Medal instead. Kelly Anne McCormick (born February 13, 1960 in Anaheim, California) is a retired female diver from the United States. She twice competed for her native country at the Summer Olympics, winning a silver (1984) and a bronze medal (1988) in the Women's 3m Springboard event. Kelly is the daughter of the famous diving champion Pat McCormick and diving coach Glenn McCormick. Growing up in Rossmoor, CA in the 1960s and 1970s Kelly’s first sport was gymnastics, and by the age of 13 she was an elite gymnast on the same team with Olympian Cathy Rigby. Kelly attended Los Alamitos High School where she began “playing around” with diving and then attended the Ohio State University to be coached by Vince Panzanno.
