Joaquín Capilla
Joaquín Capilla Pérez (December 23, 1928 – May 8, 2010), was a Mexican diver who won the largest number of Olympic medals among Mexican athletes. Together with his elder brother Alberto he competed in the 3 m springboard and 10 m platform at the 1948, 1952 and 1956 Olympics and won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, finishing fourth in the two remaining competitions. He also won four medals at the Pan American Games, in 1951 and 1955. After retiring from competitions Capilla descended into poverty, chain smoking and alcoholism, eventually losing his family and home. He recovered owing to religion and later earned a degree in theology. In 2009 he was awarded the National Sports Award. Diving At The Summer Olympics
Diving was first introduced in the official programme of the Summer Olympic Games at the 1904 Games of St. Louis and has been an Olympic sport since. It was known as "fancy diving" for the acrobatic stunts performed by divers during the dive (such as somersaults and twists). This discipline of Aquatics, along with swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo, is regulated and supervised by the International Swimming Federation (FINA), the international federation (IF) for aquatic sports. Birte Christoffersen (later Hanson, then Ekberg; born 28 March 1924) is a Danish retired diver. She competed in the 3 m springboard and 10 m platform for Denmark at the 1948 Summer Olympics and for Sweden at the 1956 and 1960 Summer Olympics The 1960 Summer Olympics ( it, Giochi Olimpici estivi del 1960), officially known as the Games of the XVII Olympiad ( it, Giochi della XVII Olimpiade) and commonly known as Rome 1960 ( it, Roma 1960), were an international multi-sport event held .... Patricia Anne Elsener (October 22, 1929 – September 29, 2019) was an American diver. She won the AAU indoor 3 m springboard title in 1946 and 1947. Zoe Ann Olsen-Jensen (née ''Olsen''; February 11, 1931 – September 23, 2017) was an American diver. She competed in the 3 m springboard at the 1948 and 1952 Olympics and won a silver and a bronze medal, respectively. During her career Olsen won 12 AAU diving titles, starting from 1945 as a 14-year-old. In 1949 she married the football and baseball player Jackie Jensen, and divorced him in 1968. Early years Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Olsen-Jensen is the daughter of Art Olsen and Norma Bragstad Olsen. Her father was a coach and school principal; her mother taught swimming and was described as "a pioneer of synchronized swimming." She attended La Porte School in La Porte City, Iowa, but she and her mother moved to Oakland, California, when her father enlisted for military service in World War II. Vicki Draves
Victoria Manalo Draves (' Manalo; December 31, 1924 – April 11, 2010) was a Filipino American competitive diver who won gold medals in both platform and springboard diving at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. Draves became the first woman to be awarded gold medals for both the ten-meter platform and the three-meter springboard. Additionally, Draves became the first American woman to win two gold medals in diving, and the first Asian American to win Olympic gold medals. She was born in San Francisco. Sammy Lee (diver)
Samuel Lee (August 1, 1920 – December 2, 2016) was an American physician and diver. He was the first Asian American man to win an Olympic gold medal for the United States (the second Asian American to win a gold medal overall) and the first man to win back-to-back gold medals in Olympic platform diving. Early life and education Lee was born in Fresno, California to parents of Korean descent who owned what he described as "a little chop suey restaurant". His father was fluent in English and Korean, tutored in French, graduated with a degree in civil engineering from Occidental College, and opened a chop suey restaurant and market. As a twelve-year-old living near Los Angeles in 1932, Lee saw and was motivated by the many Olympics banners and souvenirs on display for the Summer Olympics being held in Los Angeles that year. At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, four diving events were contested, two for men, and two for women. The competitions were held from Monday 10 August 1936 to Saturday 15 August 1936. Medal summary The events are labelled as 3 metre springboard and 10 metre platform by the International Olympic Committee, and appeared on the 1937 Official Report as ''springboard diving'' and ''high diving'', respectively.Organisationskomitee für die XI. Miller Anderson (diver)
Miller Altman Anderson (December 27, 1922 – October 29, 1965) was an American diver, who won his first national diving championship in 1942, in the 3-meter springboard. A flyer during World War II, he was forced to parachute from his plane on his 112th mission, and his left leg was severely injured. A silver plate was inserted into his knee, and he had to learn to dive all over again after the war. Representing Ohio State, Anderson won the NCAA 3-meter championship, the national 1-meter championship, and the national 3-meter championship in 1946, 1947, and 1948. He also won silver medals in the springboard event at the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympics. Anderson was the first to perform a forward one-and-a-half somersault with two twists and a backward one-and-a-half with one twist. Anderson died of a heart attack in his home on October 29, 1965, aged 42. In 1967 he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
