''Diuris suffusa'', commonly known as mottled donkey orchid, is a species of orchid that is endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. It has two or three linear to lance-shaped leaves and up to seven cream-coloured to creamy-yellow flowers with light brown to reddish-brown markings. Description ''Diuris suffusa'' is a tuberous, perennial herb with two or three linear to lance-shaped leaves long and wide. Up to seven cream-coloured to creamy-yellow flowers with light brown to reddish-brown markings, long and wide are borne on a flowering stem tall. The dorsal sepal is egg-shaped, long, wide and curved backwards, the lateral sepals narrowly oblong, turned back and crossed, long and wide. Among the many wildflowers in Western Australia, there are around four hundred species of orchids. Early identifications One of the first botanists to study Western Australia was Archibald Menzies, aboard HMS ''Discovery'', who explored King George Sound in 1791. Many of the samples (including orchids) were lost in the return to England, but those that did survive were documented in ''Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van Diemen'', published by Robert Brown in 1810. ''Diuris'', commonly known as donkey orchids, bee orchids, nanny goat orchids or pansy orchids, is a genus of more than sixty species of flowering plants in the orchid family, Orchidaceae and is endemic to Australia, apart from one species endemic to Timor. The name "''Diuris''" refers to the hanging sepals but the common name "donkey orchid", derives from the ear-like petals common to all species. The Avon Wheatbelt is a bioregion in Western Australia. It has an area of . It is considered part of the larger Southwest Australia savanna ecoregion. Geography The Avon Wheatbelt bioregion is mostly a gently undulating landscape with low relief. It lies on the Yilgarn Craton, an ancient block of crystalline rock, which was uplifted in the Tertiary and dissected by rivers.
