Belize is a country on the north-eastern coast of Central America. It is bordered by Mexico to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Guatemala to the west and south. It also shares a maritime boundary with Honduras to the southeast. Dangriga, formerly known as Stann Creek Town, is a town in southern Belize, located on the Caribbean Sea, Caribbean coast at the mouth of the North Stann Creek River. Belize has 247 recognized municipalities, consisting of 2 cities, 7 towns, and 238 villages. Each type of municipality has a different form of government as defined by Title VIII of the Laws of Belize. The largest municipality by population in Belize is Belize City with a population of 57,164. The smallest municipalities by population are the villages of Estrella and Honey Camp, each with 37 residents. Cities and towns There are two cities (Belize City and Belmopan) and seven towns in Belize. As of 2000, the seven towns are Benque Viejo del Carmen, Corozal Town, Dangriga, Orange Walk Town, Punta Gorda, San Ignacio, and San Pedro. Each constituency sends one representative to House of Representatives of Belize, Belize's House of Representatives for 5-year terms. This election is known as the General Election. Punta Gorda, declared a town on Monday, 21 January 1895, known locally as P.G., is the capital and largest town of Toledo District in southern Belize. Punta Gorda is the southernmost sizable town in the nation, with a population of about 5,000 people. Although the town bears a Spanish language, Spanish name, its inhabitants are mostly Belizean Creole, Kriol/English language, English-speaking and are primarily of Garifuna, Indians in Belize, East Indian, Belizean Creole people, Kriol, and Maya peoples, Maya descent. Punta Gorda is a seaport and fishing town on the Caribbean Sea. It was a small fishing village before it was settled by a number of Garifuna emigrants from Honduras in 1823. Orange Walk Town
Orange Walk is the fourth largest town in Belize, with a population of about 13,400 (Official Release of the Main Findings of the 2010 Population and Housing Census). It is the capital of the Orange Walk District. Orange Walk Town is located on the left bank of the New River, north of Belize City and south of Corozal Town. Despite the English name of the city, its residents are primarily Spanish-speaking mestizos. History In the days of the Maya civilization, the area was known as Holpatin. The district is home to the largest Maya temple of the pre-classic period. The Maya of the area came in contact with the Europeans in the 1530s, after which the two groups fought over land.
