Loxton, South Australia
Loxton is a town on the south bank of the River Murray in the Riverland region of South Australia. It is located on the lands of the Erawirung people who occupied the area before European colonisation. At the 2016 census, Loxton had a population of 4,568. It is a service town for the surrounding districts. Loxton's primary productions are agriculture & horticulture. Citrus fruit, wine grapes, almond and stone fruit trees are prevalent. Loxton is also the main town for the northern part of the Murray Mallee which is a dryland farming and grain cropping area. Loxton High School provides secondary education for the area. Loxton has a pioneer settlement museum (known as the Loxton Historical Village), preserving the heritage of the mallee region. District Council Of Waikerie
The District Council of Waikerie was a local government area in South Australia from 1914 to 1997, centring on the town of Waikerie. It was proclaimed on 19 February 1914 as a seven-member council comprising the cadastral Hundreds of Waikerie and Holder. It adopted a ward system in February 1923, with seven wards (Town, Waikerie, Ramco, Qualco, New Well, Holder South and Holder North) each electing one councillor. In 1923, the council was described as "the hub of what is one of the best fruitgrowing areas in the state", with Waikerie "a comparatively new township of rapid growth". In that year, the council was responsible for an area of 300,800 acres, with a population estimated at 1,866, including 400 ratepayers, and capital value of ratable property of £476,700. Holder, South Australia
Holder is a locality in the Riverland region of South Australia. It lies on the inside of a bend in the Murray River east (upstream) of Waikerie. Holder is bounded on the south side by the Sturt Highway and includes the Waikerie Airport and Maize Island Lagoon Conservation Park. The locality includes low-lying wetlands near river level and rising and higher ground up to the level at the top of the Murray cliffs where the airport and highway are. The sloping and higher ground is used for vineyards and fruit orchards, irrigated from the river. The school opened in 1925 and closed in 1991. Holder Settlement was established in 1894 and continued as a Village Settlement when that legislation was introduced. Caliph is a locality in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. Its name was derived from a variety of wheat grown in the area. Caliph was a station on the Moorook railway line The Moorook railway line was a railway line on the South Australian Railways network. It ran from a junction with the Barmera line at Wanbi north to Yinkanie near Moorook opening on 7 September 1925. It was proposed to later extend the line ... which opened in 1925 and closed in 1971. The town was surveyed in May 1926 but no longer exists. The former community hall is a stone building near the railway station, but is no longer in use. Its boundaries were created on 28 September 2000 for the "long established local name". Its name is derived from the Billiatt Conservation Park and the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Billiatt.
