The Director of Immigration is the head of the Immigration Department of the Hong Kong Government, which is responsible for immigration issues and controlling entry ports into Hong Kong. Immigration Department (Hong Kong)
The Immigration Department of the Government of Hong Kong is responsible for immigration control of Hong Kong. After the People's Republic of China assumed sovereignty of the territory in July 1997, Hong Kong's immigration system remained largely unchanged from its British predecessor model. Residents from mainland China do not have the right of abode in Hong Kong, nor can they enter the territory freely, both before and after 1997. There are different regulations that apply to residents of Macau, another Special Administrative Region of China. In addition, visa-free entry acceptance regulations into Hong Kong for passport holders of some 170 countries remain unchanged before and after 1997. Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP) is a free, non-profit news website based in Hong Kong. It was co-founded in 2015 by Tom Grundy, who believed that the territory's press freedom was in decline, to provide an alternative to the dominant English-language news source, the ''South China Morning Post'', and to cover the pro-democracy movement. Erick Tsang
Erick Tsang Kwok-wai (; born 1 September 1963) is a Hong Kong government official. Since 2020, he has been Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, one of the principal officials of Hong Kong. Prior to that, he was Director of Immigration. Biography Tsang joined the Immigration Department (Hong Kong), Immigration Department in 1987 and rose through the ranks to Principal Immigration Officer in 2009. He was Assistant Secretary for Security from 2003 to 2006. In 2012, he became Assistant Director of Immigration and then in 2014, Deputy Director of Immigration. Eric Chan
Eric Chan Kwok-ki (; born 5 April 1959) is a Hong Kong politician who is the incumbent Chief Secretary for Administration since 1 July 2022. He was also the secretary-general of the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Committee for Safeguarding National Security (2020–2022). Previously, he served as Director of the Office of the Chief Executive, Chief Executive's Office (2017–2022) and Director of Immigration (2011–2016). Simon Peh
Simon Peh Yun-lu (, born 1955) was Director of Immigration of Hong Kong, and was appointed Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption in 2012. Early life and education Peh was born in Anxi County, Quanzhou, Fujian. graduated from Pui Ching Middle School in 1973. He completed college in 1978. Career Peh joined the Immigration Department as an Immigration Officer. In 1984, he was promoted to Senior Immigration Officer, and Chief Immigration Officer in 1991. In 2004, he began serving as Assistant Director of Immigration. In April 2008, Peh was appointed Director of Immigration when his predecessor Lai Tung-kwok accepted the post of Under Secretary for Security. Lai Tung-kwok, GBS, IDSM, JP (; born 12 November 1951 in Hong Kong) is a retired civil servant and principal official who held the position of Secretary for Security of Hong Kong between 2012 and 2017. He previously served as Under Secretary for Security from 2009 to 2012 and Director of Immigration from 2002 to 2008. Lai joined the Hong Kong government as an Assistant Immigration Officer in 1973. He was promoted to Immigration Officer in 1980, Senior Immigration Officer in 1986, Chief Immigration Officer in 1990, Assistant Principal Immigration Officer in 1992, Principal Immigration Officer in 1995, Senior Principal Immigration Officer in 1997 and to Assistant Director of Immigration in 1999. Ambrose Lee
Ambrose Lee Siu-kwong (; 17 August 1948 – 14 August 2022) was a Hong Kong politician, Secretary for Security of Hong Kong and a member of the Executive Council. He was appointed to his post on 5 August 2003, replacing Regina Ip. Background Lee graduated from The University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor Degree of Science in Electrical Engineering and also pursued administrative development and senior executive studies at Tsinghua University, University of Oxford, Harvard University. Alan Carter (civil Servant)
Alan John Carter (; 5 August 1929 – 1 April 2016) was a British and Hong Kong immigration official. He was the Director of Immigration of Hong Kong from 1983 to 1989, being the last expatriate to hold the office. He died in April 2016 at the age of 86. Career Early career Carter joined the Civil Service in 1949 as an Executive Officer in the Ministry of Works. He was appointed, on in-service transfer, as an Immigration Officer of the Immigration Branch of the Home Office in 1955 and was promoted Chief Immigration Officer in 1963. Au Ka-wang (; born 1967) is the current Director of Immigration of Hong Kong since July 2020. He began service in the Immigration Department in 1988.
