Digby Pepys, 7th Earl Of Cottenham
John Digby Thomas Pepys, 7th Earl of Cottenham (14 June 1907 – 12 May 1968) was an English peer, baronet, business man, and breeder of Thoroughbred horses. He was a member of the House of Lords from 1943 until his death in 1968. The third son of Kenelm Pepys, 4th Earl of Cottenham, he was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, from where he was commissioned as a Lieutenant into the 10th Royal Hussars. In 1933, Digby Pepys became managing director of Peter Merchant Ltd, an industrial catering company, and in 1946 also of Lockhart Group Ltd. Baronet
A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James VI and I, James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. A baronetcy is the only British Hereditary title, hereditary honour that is not a peerages in the United Kingdom, peerage, with the exception of the Anglo-Irish Knight of Glin, Black Knights, White Knight (Fitzgibbon family), White Knights, and Knight of Kerry, Green Knights (of whom only the Green Knights are extant). Tattersalls
Tattersalls (formerly Tattersall's) is the main auctioneer of race horses in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Founding It was founded in 1766 by Richard Tattersall (1724–1795), who had been stud groom to the second Duke of Kingston. The first premises occupied were near Hyde Park Corner, in what was then the outskirts of London. Two "Subscription rooms" were reserved for members of the Jockey Club, and they became the rendezvous for sporting and betting men. Among the famous dispersal sales conducted by "Old Tatt" were those of the Duke of Kingston's stud in 1774 and of the stud of the Prince of Wales (afterwards George IV) in 1786. The prince often visited Richard Tattersall, and was joint proprietor with him of the ''Morning Post'' for several years. The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) is an art gallery in London housing a collection of portraits of historically important and famous British people. It was arguably the first national public gallery dedicated to portraits in the world when it opened in 1856. The gallery moved in 1896 to its current site at St Martin's Place, off Trafalgar Square, and adjoining the National Gallery (London), National Gallery. It has been expanded twice since then. Kenelm Charles Everard Digby Pepys, 8th Earl of Cottenham (27 November 1948 – 20 October 2000) was an English peer, baronet, cricketer, equestrian, business man, and designer. Known until 1968 as Viscount Crowhurst, he was later known to his friends as Charlie Cottenham. He was a member of the House of Lords from 1969 until 1999. The son of Digby Pepys, 7th Earl of Cottenham, and his wife Lady Angela Larnach-Nevill, a daughter of Guy Larnach-Nevill, 4th Marquess of Abergavenny, he was a second cousin seven times removed of the diarist Samuel Pepys and was educated at Eton College. Luke Richard White, 6th Baron Annaly (born 1953), is a British hereditary peer and former Government Whip in the House of Lords, who sat on the Conservative benches. Luke Robert White, 5th Baron Annaly (15 March 1927 – 30 September 1990), was an English first-class cricketer. Annaly was a good schoolboy cricketer at Eton College and made a century at Lord's for a Public Schools team against a Lord's XI in 1944. He made his first-class debut for an England team in the third of the 1945 Victory Tests against the Australian Services XI, sharing a partnership of 55 with Len Hutton. Lord Rupert Charles Montecute Nevill (29 January 1923 – 19 July 1982) was Chairman of the British Olympic Association from 1966 to 1977 and then its President until his death. As a courtier, he was treasurer and later private secretary to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, between 1970 and 1982. Early life Nevill was the younger son of Guy Larnach-Nevill, 4th Marquess of Abergavenny and his wife Isabel Nellie Larnach and was educated at Eton College. Career During the Second World War, Lord Rupert Nevill gained the rank of captain in the Life Guards. He served as aide-de-camp to Lieutenant-General Sir Brian Horrocks during the allied advance in 1945 and continued as aide-de-camp after the war until 1947. Nevill served as Chairman of the British Olympic Association from 1966 to 1977 and as its President from 1977 until his death in 1982, being succeeded in this role by Anne, Princess Royal.
