''Die Sieben vom Rhein'' is an East German documentary film directed by Andrew and Annelie Thorndike. It was released in 1954. Thorndike made the film with his wife Annelie; it was made as part of the "Germans at the Same Table" campaign, and documented the visit of a West German workers delegation from the Ruhr to an East German steel factory is Riesa. According to author Bert Hogenkamp, "even political opponents had to admit that Andrew and Annelie Thorndike had made a masterpiece". Andrew Thorndike
Andrew Thorndike (30 August 1909 – 14 December 1979) was a German documentary film director. He directed 16 films between 1949 and 1977. His 1950 documentary, '' Der Weg nach oben'', won the Best Documentary Film at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 1951. He was a member of the jury at the 5th Moscow International Film Festival. At the 11th Moscow International Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded the Honorable Prize for his contribution to cinema. Background Thorndike was related to a ''Mayflower'' family who had settled in the United States. He grew up in a wealthy family on an estate in Senzig, outside of Berlin, the son of an advertising executive. Thorndike's father was on the board of Krupp. He received commercial training before becoming an employee of Ufa in 1931. Thorndike quickly became head of the firm's advertising film division. Riesa
Riesa is a town in the district of Meißen in Saxony, Germany. It is located on the river Elbe, approximately northwest of Dresden. History The name ''Riesa'' is derived from Slavic ''Riezowe''. This name, romanised as "Rezoa", appears first in October 1119 in a document from Pope Callixtus II. The world's first 110 kV power line was installed between Riesa and Lauchhammer in 1912. Between 1952 and 1994, Riesa was the seat of a district. During the 1980s, Riesa was the headquarters of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany's 9th Tank Division. Population history The town grew from the start of the 20th century due to industrialisation. The population declined after German Reunification in 1989. East German Films
This is a list, in year order, of the most notable films produced in the Soviet Occupation Zone of Germany and the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) from 1945 until German Reunification in October 1990. The state owned East German film company DEFA produced about 800 feature films between 1946 and 1992. Besides DEFA, the state broadcaster DFF and the Deutsche Hochschule für Filmkunst (now the Filmuniversität Babelsberg) were the only other organizations in the GDR that produced feature films for cinematic release, although far fewer than DEFA. DEFA also produced about 750 animated movies and more than 2500 documentaries and short films.
